2.7 Ecoboost
TFL Truck ran a 2.7 up the Ike Gauntlet towing 7200#. It had 3.55 gears and they couldn't floor it and keep it under the 60 mph speed limit. Looks like it went most of the way up between about 2800 and 3500 rpm. That's impressive for any vehicle with any engine.

The micro eb pulled up that load without much effort. Rather remarkable. Interesting to note that if you use the 1% loss per 1000 feet for forced induction and the 3% loss per 1000 feet for naturally aspirated then the 2.7tt qnd GM 6.2 have the same horsepower at 10000 feet elevation.
Even with its impressive specs, the 2.7tt may be underated as seen on a 5 star tuning dyno. On the other hand, the 380 hp 5.3 gm is way overated as it was only getting 260 hp on the dyno The testing at TFL is not perfect, especially since they keep changing their damn trailers, it is still possibly the best real world testing that shows how truck will handle the worst of the worst conditions. |
This is good to know. I'm looking to replace my 2011 and downsizing my truck from a crew cab to a super cab. I also don't need the 3.5l engine since I rarely tow and when I do it's light weight towing. I was looking at the 2.7l, but as with other people waiting to see any type of review and real world results. I really only need a Ranger sized truck, but Ford doesn't do that.

I test drove a 2.7L the other day, and was quite impressed.

Heck, you would probably be happy with the base NA 3.5.
|
That's because the base engine is not available in a Lariat. The 2.7 is standard with 5.0 and 3.5 EB as options.
|
That was kind of my point.

Impressive! I know my EcoBoost ran up I-70 with a camper attached. I didn't make that exact run but was close. I had to lift several times because other 1/2 tons with trailers were blocking the lane. It was a lot of fun to have my lil ol' V6 Ford leaving those veeee ate "man's" trucks in the dust.
Speaking of Fords, I'd do baaaad things for the Bronco they had. |
Something else of note - on that run up the Gauntlet it got about 4 mpg.

I wonder how hot the transmission got? That's the thing I really notice on long uphill climbs pulling our trailer. However, the outside temperature looked pretty cool where they were, and that acts to keep the transmission a lot cooler. In Arizona, our long climbs are usually done with outside temperature in the 100-105 degree range and that kicks the TFT up to around 225. I think it's stayed below 200 when I've pulled our trailer over 11,000 ft passes in Colorado. - Jack |
I think I read on the page that the temp was 36.
I doubt that the trans would get very hot anyway - it looks like the torque converter stayed locked up most of the way up. I'm assuming they used tow/haul mode which is programmed for max lockup. |
Last year my trans never topped 205 or so while pulling a camper up a very similar grade. This was in late July with an outside temp of 80ish at that altitude. It was in the 90s in Denver that day. Running unloaded the 6R80 runs 195 or so during the summer.

Any chance this 2.7 will find its way into a Supercrew long bed 4x4?

I am BVA'ed in a lariat 2.7 3.31 rear end while my truck is in the shop and I have to say it is really smooth and has a lot of power, I think it's faster than my 3.5 Eco, but the auto start/stop is really annoying!

I drove a couple of rental Focus cars and the auto trans disengages completely when you stop and hold the brake. I brake with my left foot and I am used to gassing while I release the brake at stops and the Focus would just rev until I release the brake and then would jerk. I thought the transmission was messed up but it was designed that way. Very irritating to me.
I hope the trucks are not that way. |
That's because the Focus has a dual clutch automatic. The F-150 has a conventional.

I swapped today from a 2013 5.0 to the 2015 2.7L EB and I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. I was a little worried about it since I usually spend 2-3 hours daily on the road in Houston. I thought I might lose some "zippiness". The acceleration is just so fluid, especially on a freeway. I didn't realize I was going 80 a couple of times until I looked down. The weight difference really shows. This motor has me won over already. The engine stop and start on brake, that's still a work in progress. My opinion could be worthless as I don't ever tow anything. I just love trucks and for a daily driver, this little engine is plenty.

Put 150 miles on the 2.7L this week and this was my MPG. |
I have about 3000 miles on mine. have a trip meter set from the time I bought it. Average 19.4 MPG. Most of my commute is freeway and I drive between 75 - 80 MPH
Have averaged over 21 MPG on each of the last two tanks. |
