Ready to order, need advice
Morning!
This is my first post and I am seeking some engine advice. I am in the middle of having my lemon Silverado bought back by GM and have decided to order an F150 RCSB 2wd in lithium grey. I am torn between the 2.7 Ecoboost with the 3.73 locker, or the 5.0 with the 3.55 locker. I can see the advantages to both. The draw for the 5.0 is its the coyote v8, sounds amazing, tough engine and maybe might last longer and be more simple to take care of. The draw for the EB is it is newer tech, lighter, probably faster, possibly quieter running, but I’m worried about complexity and longevity. There’s only $1000 difference between the two, so that is not a huge factor, but it does factor in I suppose. I am a mechanic by trade, but doesnt mean I want to be working on my own junk all the time Any wisdom you all could throw my way is appreciated. I was going to put the order in last night, and may tonight, but havent yet because I’m really on the fence on this engine choice.
Thanks!

Depends on what you want out of the truck. Since it seems you are snake bit at the moment coming off of a bad GM truck, I'd avoid the 2.7 like it has a disease. There have been some issues with the 2.7 and just like the first 3.5 EB engines, Ford will work its way thru them but do you want to go on that ride? Probably not. If you'll look at the Edmunds Long Term testing of the 5.0 and the 2.7, both in 4x4 form, they got better fuel mileage with the 5.0. Wards Ten Best Engines kicked the 2.7 from the list due to fuel mileage issues as well. Obviously with the 5.0, there is no comparison when it comes to power. I'd opt for the older but historically good 5.0 and leave the rest of the world to be the test dummies with the 2.7.
Here's Edmunds test. Note, the 5.0 came with the standard rear axle ratio, 3.31 which is rated to tow more than the 2.7 with the 3.73 axle. I'd suggest you consider the entire test. The trucks used in the test were about as identical as you can get, considering.

This is a very good point and I guess sums up my apprehension about another new truck at all. I think that's the clincher argument right there. I need this next one to be a good'n, this GM deal has taken its pound of flesh. 5.0 it is, as long as it's not too late in the year to order one
Thanks!

The 5.0 has more power than the 2.7 anyway.
The 2016 F-150 order bank closed on July 15, you can order a 2017 now, but production won't start till September/October.

Good luck on your new truck, as other have said above, you can't go wrong with the 5.0. I have the 3.5EB in my 2016 KR and love it, but just drove my dad's 2015 SCREW with the 5.0 and it is no slouch! I floored it off the line several times and it "barked" the rears every time! He had be drive it as he's feeling a slight hesitation under light acceleration from a dead stop. I was able to replicate it and going into the shop. Doesn't appear to be anything major though.
Post pics when you get you new ride, sounds awesome! I honestly haven't seen a regular cab yet of the 15/16 model.
