New truck, not excited
 
I have had my 2010 FX2 since new and love my truck and a 2005 previous to that. Its coming close to 90k and want to upgrade. Went to Ford to check out the "new" trucks and was let down, I feel like its my truck (current and old) just with minor exterior/interior upgrades. I should be excited getting a new F150, but I am not. Just ranting....fell off the F150 loop and now that I need a new one not sure what to look for as far as motor, whats the best motor option on the "new" trucks?

Depends on model and what you are going to be using the truck for.

You may get mixed responses to this question. I personally prefer the 3.5L Ecoboost. I was only a V8 guy for many years until buying my first Ecoboost (2014 Limited). My 2018 F-150 Platinum FX4 is only my second Ecoboost but I really like it. The new truck has more than enough power for me.

For us to really help you would need to tell us what you do with the truck. Tow? Just haul he occasional dirbike? Yard waste? Camping with friends and family inyiur supercrew? Race or like to modify for more power? Lift?

That said you probably have a V8 motor. Going into a 5.0 V8 with say a 10 speed if you buy 2018 your going to find a whole new best friend. If go fast, and tow mega loads is your baby then by all means get a 3.5. Staying under 5000 pounds but still want to go fast and get very good fuel mileage jump into the 2.7.
Each has pluses and minuses. You just have to chose. No matter what you get your going to be into a whole new truck compared to the 2010.

You may need to follow your gut feelings and keep your old truck and just do some cleaning up and a few upgrades to it. One doesn't necessarily have to get excited buying a new truck. Only to feel like you have used your better judgement buying or not buying. Never buy if you only can look forward to the excitement.

Every 6 months when I go to the dealer for service I walk the lot. Yeah - the new trucks look nice but I am just not compelled to upgrade from my '09 FX4 w/lux package. I guess I just like my truck enough.

And to upgrade to an equal truck today I will be pushing $60k sticker price. When I am done and drive away in my awesome truck I smile - I love my truck and have no payments.

I'm not going to tell you to get a new truck. I generally shoot for ten years out of a truck. I can tell you these trucks are a whole lot different than your 2010. The advancements in vehicle control and comfort over the last few years are crazy good. I'm a fan of the 3.5 EB although I would consider the 2.7 if I didn't need the towing capacity. I don't know that excitement is a word I would use purchasing a new truck. It's a utilitarian vehicle for me personally and I try to drive them until they are worn out. All that said I am really enjoying my 2017 Platinum. The thing is somewhere between a rolling family room and piloting the space shuttle.

Keep the truck that is paid for and buy a GT350. Then you still have a truck you like and something that has plenty of excitement.

If gas mileage is #1 to you then you'll want the 2.7 EB. It will still be fine for towing unless you have something heavy to tow, but for everyday back and forth to work the 2.7 is a really nice engine. Summertime with 70% highway, I'm consistently getting between 23 & 24 mpg.

Mine's a 2016 w/2.7 came from a 2013 with a 3.5 EB. With the lighter weight of the 2016 along with the 2.7 it actually feels faster than my 2013 did.

I have been driving Chevys for years, last FORD I owned was a 1976 F-250 that was back in 1982, I just bought a 2017 F150 Eco and I LOVE it.

My first Ford truck was a 1985 F-150 XLT. I've been driving Ford trucks ever since. It would be a foolish choice to buy a new truck thinking that it is going to be perfect regardless what you paid for it. We would not be able to afford a Ford F-150 that had 100% flawless details and every component was 100% inspected before it was installed. Fortunate for many of us, our trucks have met our expectations.

I'm also getting ready to buy. Nothing about any new truck excites me. It's a truck. Motorcycles are a whole different story.

I'm going 5.0 because I need a hidden winch behind the front bumper, and you cannot do that with an intercooler occupying the space. There currently is no option to move the intercooler and keep warranty. I'm dreading giving up my Mile Marker hydraulic winch for an electric, but no choice with the new trucks. The Raptor was the last 150 with hydraulics but not on the new ones.

Only as a word of wisdom. Check your expectations...... set back an consider what you're paying for and consider your investment compared to what you want out of a new truck. I'm afraid there are way to many high expectations especially for folks that are buying a new truck for the first time. If you can not tolerate or deal with inconveniences and frustration you should consider staying away from such an investment.

The new trucks are nice, but I am not liking the thought of paying so much for a truck. For me, even a $34k deal on an STX is a bit much. The wife's Ram was $33k and I do not enjoy those payments. I can pick up a built long block, from MHS for $5.9k Won't reach the power of current gen stuff, with that particular block, but with my gearing I am sure it would put a smile on my face regardless.

Yes, the new trucks are nice, but expensive.

I paid $19k out the door for my '07 brand new with ~10 miles on it back in 2007.

Never will I find a deal like that again.
