I went to get my first oil change today at my ford dealer, and when they got finished I took the paperwork and left without looking at it. My mistake, I was late for a lunch date and the paper always say they put in x amount of oil and a new filter. When I got to the restaurant about 2 miles away, I happen to glance down at it and I noticed it said they put in 6 quarts of 5w-20 oil and new filter. I remember reading here somewhere where this has happened before and it should be 5w-30 oil. I checked the owners manual and it also said 5w-30 oil. I called the dealer back and ask him about this, he said that 5w-20 was correct and that it what they have been putting in all the ecoboosts because that is what their ford chart said, and that is what it says on the oil cap,{ 5w-20 ). I looked and it did say 5w20 on the oil cap but told him this was wrong. He said he would call me right back, and when he did he said I was right. They checked an owners manual and the internet which did show it should use 5w 30. I took it back and they changed the oil to the right one. I made them give me a new oil cap that says 5w30. We went and looked on several other 2015 ecoboost trucks and they all said 5w20 on the oil cap. He said they will have to change their information to put the right oil in, and they would call Ford to let them know about this. they said they have done probably 50 plus oil changes with the wrong oil. Anyone else notice the wrong oil cap?

 

5W20 won't hurt an Ecoboost but you should change it more often if you use it.

 

Thank you for this information glc. I did not know this. I wont panic if it happens again. Would using 5w20 mean you stay around 3000 or 5000 mile oil changes with normal driving and no towing? I usually change around 7500 miles using the 5w30. Thanks again.

 

Looks like there are folks at Ford that don't know the difference between a 3.5 engine and 3.5 EcoBoost. I wouldn't want the 5w-20 in my EB if I had one. You paid for the right oil, go get it. Those engine make for a lot shearing that the 5w-20 just isn't going to handle. Like I said, you paid for the right oil, go git it.

 

I'm picking up my new truck on Tuesday, it will be the first thing I ask to the delivery guys thats for sure.
the vendor wouldnt know that as he didnt know about the LED side-mirror spotlight.

The 2015 has an oil life monitor. When the message center tells you to change the oil, you change the oil. Nothing wrong with 7500 miles with today's oils and engines if the monitor doesn't tell you to change it beforehand.

Change your oil when you want, but don't diss other members who don't agree with your opinion.

Mine says 5w-30. And there is no way I would ever go 7500 miles between oil changes.

 

Going by the oil monitor on the 3 ecoboosts I have owned, it still shows about 25% oil life left when I get to the 7500 mile mark. My miles are mostly highway with no towing. Lazy? No. On a daily basis I probably would work circles around you all day long.

 

I change at 5,000 miles because that gives me the additional warranty of BG. My oil life monitor on one occasion showed me getting down below 25% at that mileage when I had done extensive towing in tow/haul mode on that cycle.

The service manager at Bob Hurley Ford where we bought the truck said that the oil life monitor doesn't actually physically touch the oil, but it just evaluates driving habits, rpm, (and presumably how much you run in tow/haul) etc.

 

That makes perfect sense to me! Looking at how the oil life monitor registers in my 2014 EcoBoost, it appears I could go about 10,000 miles between changes as long as I'm not towing, since almost all of my driving is on highways.
