Was at the dealer today buying the wife a new Edge. The had a brochure on the 2018 F150's and it listed the power ratings of the engines used. All 4 engine choices utilize the new dual injection system. The main one that I was interested in was the 5.0 and per Fords numbers that they are telling the dealers is 395 hp and 400 tq for the truck version of the 5.0

The 3.5 EB is 375 hp 470 tq, and I believe it is the same as 17's

IIRC the 2.7 EB was 325 hp 400 tq

I'm curious to see what the torque curve looks like on the 5.0. Considering how good of an engine it has been without DI, it has the potential to have an impressive spread with the dual system.

 

There is a lot of HP left in the motor. Just look at the mustang numbers. Pretty easy for Ford to bump the 5.0 up 10 HP every few years.

 

Yeah and I've been happy camper with the 2014 3.7 I have until the last trip to N Carolina mountains. The truck struggled. But I also don't live there. The numbers on the 5.0 are mighty attractive especially if it can get the expected fuel mileage. Standard axle will be a 3.15 as of now. I didn't see any optional running gear on the list. I hate the Dodge front end on the current models but the 2018s I've seen pics of look pretty decent. The wife is gonna kill me!

 

I just read the 2018 Mustang 5.0 has 460hp and 420 ft lbs torque. Ford claims it is faster than the Camaro SS 0 to 60. I enjoyed the hp wars back in the 60's but I never thought I would see it again like it is today!

I've been looking at RAM trucks too! So far I've decided I'd rather have the cash than the truck but I might not be able to hold out. I drove a Hemi Quad Cab and absolutely loved it! It rides so smooth and is so quiet. My money is at risk!

The difference between the truck 5.0 and the mustang is more than just a tune. The cams are different also.

If you notice, the gap between the truck version and the mustang keeps growing, back in 2011 the truck got 360 hp while the stang got 412, a 52 hp gap. In 2015 it was 385 vs. 435 for a 50 hp gap. Now the 18's are 395 vs 460 for a 65 hp gap.

 

The Gen1 and Gen2 Coyote the Mustang had higher compression ratio too.

I could have sworn I heard/read something recently about the Gen3 being all the same for better mass production, but I can't find anything with a little bit of digging around online?

 

True, I forgot about that. The truck was 10.5 and the mustang was 11.0

Actually ford first showed a prototype of that engine back in 2015 at the PRI show in Indianapolis and it took them a year and a half to finally make it available. You can buy it now a summit racing for 19,994.97

I may look at the 5.0 next time. Just thinking how much smoother my 6.2L gasser in my f250 is compared to my 3.5 eco, even with 100k more miles on it.

 

Doesn't it also have something to do with the power delivery and torque differences needed in a truck vs. a car?
