2009 5.4L High Mileage Problems to Look for.
Hello! I have a 2009 Platinum F150 with a 5.4L in it. I have been kicking around the idea of getting a new F150 or at least a 2015 or newer because I am getting into the higher mileage realm. I currently have 143,xxx miles on the truck. The only major thing I have had to do is replace a few AC parts but besides that, it has been solid. I purchased the truck with 100,000 miles on it a few years back. My question is is there anything I should expect or prepare for that could be costly coming up for this year of truck? If there is something that could pop up or a performance issue that could arise (I tow 10,000ibs a few times a month and smaller loads more frequent.)
As of right now I only notice small things that get a little annoying but are simple to fix. I really like the truck especially since it is rated at 11,200ibs towing and it looks like most of the newer trucks have gone down a bit or are basically equal in that regard. Let me know your thoughts or experience with a true high mileage truck, not your 60,000 mile trucks that look high to you. lol Is it realistic to expect 200,000miles if taken care of correctly?

Variable cam timing issues (phasers, solenoids, etc.) and timing chain/tensioner issues.
If you tow 10k, you need a F250. You may be rated to tow more, but that's with an empty truck and a light tongue. You are most likely over max payload/truck GVWR.
Look for a clean 2011+ F250/F350 with a 6.2. You don't need a diesel or a dualie.

I have a 2009 Lariat 4x4 crewcab with a little over 250,000 miles and no problems. To look at it you would think it had 50,000. No leaks,no smoke, no problems.I knew I was taking a chance when I bought it with 220,000 on it but so far so good. It may blow up tomorrow but I honestly feel like it'll last another 100k. I think the secret to any vehicle lasting 200k plus miles is regular maintenance. By the way, before I bought this truck I had an 06 with 230,000 miles on it that also had no issues. Good luck!

Looking at purchasing a 2009 Lariat 4 x 4 crew cab today with 147k on it. Has everyone had or heard of experiences similar to “Chargeron” on this thread. It is not my primary vehicle and I am getting it under 16k, but just wanted to get thoughts from those with experience.

how quiet? Just got a 2010 with 145000. Runs great. Quiet. At idle there is a small tap or chatter. Similar to a diesel but a fraction of the sound. Goes away in drive. Did fluids and tune up and everything was good. Also replaced pulleys and tensioner. Currently shows 18.3 mpg on dash display. I heard these 3V has a small chatter at idle.

Good Morning,
I have a 2009 F150 FX4 with the 5.4 engine, currently at 501,000 kilometers. To date I have changed the right exhaust manifold, one idler pulley and the TB (I couldn't get a TPS to fit the old TB). I did do some cam phaser work - 1 chain, 1 slider and the solenoids (@Ford) at around 180,000. I changed to 10W-30 (this past summer) with recommendations from Ford and it did seem to make it quieter, especially when hot but even at that it wasn't noisy before the change.
I changed the cop's to Sultans of Spark some time back and just changed the plugs (NGK Iridiums) which had 330,000 kms but were still firing without problems. The gaps were up to .067". I use Castrol synthetic oil.
So, all in all, I am very happy with my 5.4 and hope to run it many more miles (kilometers) since the rest of the truck is very good.

I had a '97 F159 4X4 with 265,000 miles on it and going strong before it was totaled in an accident. Now I have a '10 F150 4X4 with 146,000 miles on it and going strong. The secret is in it's life blood.....I have always ran Penzoil Full Synesthetic oil in my engines. You get better lubrication, a grade of oil that sticks to the cylinder walls longer, as well as other parts of the internal engine that should be lubricated. Change it at regular intervals and you won't go wrong. 5W/20 year round.
