2010 5.4L f150. Bad mileage

What kind of mileage is everyone getting. On the highway I'm getting 15L/100 km. Anytime im in town my
Fuel economy is cut in half. 27L/100km. does that sound right? Would a bad cam phaser be a cause of this

rufas 01-04-2013 05:15 PM

I normally see combined about 12 l/100 km during summer per lie-o-meter, sometimes better. Now that winter is here 14-15 is the norm. Been this way since new. I'd say you are as expected.

Fogducker 01-04-2013 06:04 PM

I can get as low as 12 L / 100 km highway driving with a light foot, generally around town I am getting between 14 - 16 L/100km. If you are seeing 27 then I would say that something is wrong???

cheef 01-04-2013 07:01 PM

Where do you live?
Winter gas?
Long idle times to thaw ice off windshield?
Stop and go city driving in cold slippery conditions?
I've added air to tires 3x in past 2 months since cold weather started, each time they are down 2-3lbs. In past 2 months our temps have gone from 10*c to minus 5-8*c so tires need frequent attention.

So many variables, hard to narrow it down to one single thing at this time of year if you live in cold climate.

rcherry11 01-04-2013 07:31 PM

I get around 16 mpg on my commute to work 35 miles one way, hoping on getting a new truck not sure what motor. I hear the 5.0 get better then the Eco

rufas 01-04-2013 07:47 PM

Oh geez, sorry, I didn't see the 27 in the OP's post.. I don't even see 27 towing 6000 lbs.

Ok good to know that 27/100km is unheard of. I know it's accurate because I reset it when I took a trip down south an I hit as low as 14L/100km. As soon as I got back to town it's been. Gas guzzler. The cam phaser has been bad since I bought it and the dealerhip has to see it to fix it, could this be the problem. It's been warm out so it has almost no idle time.
Here's a vid of when the knocking happens. I think it's a phaser

The truck is still under warranty. What should I expect from the dealership about this fuel mileage problem?

dave m 01-04-2013 09:34 PM

yes, 27 is horrible.

I have a 20 minute city commute everyday and get 17L/100k. Even my wife who drives like the gas pedal is an on/off switch rarely gets it up over 19L/100k. Long highway trips I can get it down to 12.

canadianelbow 01-05-2013 12:03 AM

My leveled '10 and oversized 295/70/18 tires gets the standard 17 or 18 L/100km. I run a tuner with custom tunes, but the minimal fuel savings that I may be able to stake claim to are blown out the door by my heavy foot, and desire to beat everyone else off the light.

Before anyone argues, the tire sizes have been recalibrate to be true to actual highway speed. In theory, my lie-o-meter should be deadly accurate. If I can run 17 with heavy mud tires, on the same engine, same year.......... you got troubles. How does your exhaust smell?

Biff it 01-05-2013 11:09 AM

I live in bc Canada and te temps have been warm for this time of year

Dave m; my exhaist smells normal, nothing out of the ordinary, I thought it was maybe my driving habits and heavy foot. I reset the gauge and took it slow for a few days and that did not Lower the numbers

GoingGoingGone 01-05-2013 11:57 AM

I had to go online http://www.aqua-calc.com/convert/fue...-100-kilometer to find a conversion chart, but over 42K miles, my truck "averaged" 15.2 L/100km. My normal driving is about 70% rural/suburban, 10% stop-and-go, and maybe 20% highway which, depending on the time of day can be stop-and-go as well. On my last highway trip, it averaged only slightly better.

drswiger 01-05-2013 02:19 PM

6inch lift and 35 inch NITTOs, 12.5 MPG! , but Priuses and Smartcars fear me.

canadianelbow 01-06-2013 10:44 PM

The pic of your truck reminds me of the Calgary Flames Mascot "Harvey The Hound" See if you can spot the similarity.

If only Harvey had a little orange on his ears............... or you blacked out the reflectors on that blacked out truck.

Here's a UPDATE!

Since going into the dealers twice for this issue and bad knocking cam phasers they said they cannot duplicate the knocking sound and therefore they can't fix it. They said to bring it by when it starts happening. Saturday while at Walmart it started knocking badly so raced across town to the dealers, only to wait for 45 mins By the time try looked at it it stopped. So **** them

Today I brought it too another ford dealer in town and explained. I showed them the video of the knocking and no questions asked they booked me in to get the phasers replaced. Try disent even have to look at te truck
They said the bad mileage is caused by the phasers and it causes the engine to run rich, in some cases the fuel can be seen leaking out of the exhaust. Hope this helps anyone in the future with the same problem

canadianelbow 01-07-2013 05:01 PM

WTF is a cam phaser anyway? Anyone got a picture of one, and where it is located on our 5.4's?

I've heard several complaints about these things, and by the sounds of it, it almost seems like a part that is destined to fail. Therefore, once our trucks are out of warranty, what is involved in changing them? Are they covered under the power train warranty, or just the original bumper to bumper? How many are there? How much $ are they? And is it a DIY job, or something that needs to be scanned and software updates done by a dealer scan tool?

cheef 01-08-2013 09:01 AM

I think livernois shows pics of phasers canadianelbow

Canadianelbow; a cam phaser is a eternal engine part. Its getting covered by my extended warranty purchased from ford

Is there any way you can upload this video so others may hear what it sounds like? Thanks

20054x4xlt 01-08-2013 06:22 PM

its a truck. if your worried about gas mileage you shouldnt have got one in the first place.

drswiger 01-08-2013 07:47 PM

Third f150 I've owned and I can tell you they go out every time and almost always after the warranty has passed
Despite that, I wouldn't buy a GM product at ANY price!

cheef 01-08-2013 10:11 PM

Maybe this will help:

mms://multimedia.ford.com/seopts/Tech22_250k.wmv

flatratetech.com I think was original on this

Didn't take as long as I thought it would for highly intelligent remarks as this to be posted.

Bad gas mileage means you shoulda bought Mini Cooper and its not any fault of the vehicle, it's YOU!!!!

Hope that helps clear things up for you!!

2010 F150 5.4L Poor mileage after Factory software update.

Been trying to figure out what happened to gas mileage since update had done in Oct. I'll explain how I got to this point. Around Sept. started having engine Light come on, stay on for a while go back off. Really intermittent. Also noticed every once in a while when i would drive for a while then put in park engine would Idle up to about 2.5 grand and back down to where it was ready to shut off then back up. Cycle like this until you shut it off. Took in to Authorized for dealer only place truck has been since purchased. Oct.4th. I should mention truck now has about 45000 miles. Was about 38000 in Oct. Was told needed software update on Computer. No problem, no cost. What could it harm? Right? Gas mileage before 15-18 after 13-15. This was in Oct. Since cold weather more like 12-13. (This is actual mileage not the lie-o-meter) Purchased in Feb 2011 had 250 miles on it. Have not changed driving routines still back and forth to work 26 mile round trip and around town. Since the have had a problem with cold starts. After 2 weeks in shop, was told had water and too much ethanol in gas. Couple of cans of Seafoam and a fillup , Cold start problem solved. Watch you gas. Still stuck with poor gas mileage. SORRY for such a long Thread just want you to know where I'm at in this. Anybody got anything?

cheef 01-10-2014 11:21 AM

A year ago I posted my thoughts on this topic.
This year same story.

I get 11/12/13 l/100km in the summer and since the cold weather (-10 to -40c) is here I have crap gas, 10+ minute idling times, 200lbs of snow and crap/sand in my bed, lots of 4x4 use and I've doubled my fuel consumption (20-25l/100km)

Which....I totally expect

mods in my sig for comparison
