Popping and creaking in leaf springs fixed!

I've noticed a couple people mention they hear a popping or a creaking from the rear of the truck when the truck articulates....

Its like something is loose or buckling...It doesn't sound very good..

I discovered the issue.

Its the metal tabs between the leaf springs.. I jambed a wedge into the leaf pack to seperate the middle leaf from the top...revealing the rusted tabs that are rivetes to the leaf..

I coated the them in a Rustcheck spray...

Here is a pic of where the shims are..front and back of leaf..

The truck sounds like the day I got it...Smooth...Silent...

Unbelievable how that sound transfers through the truck...I thought the bed was going to fall off....

Hope this is helpful if others find it

I used to spray some silicone spray in the leafs of my 01 to stop those noises. It would work for a couple weeks but would come back. Sounds like your setup would work longer.

Man, I may mention this to my dealer. I have had the right leaf spring replaced, the left bushings replaced, left and right bushings replaced, and then the left spring replaced. The noise is starting to manifest itself again though I'm not really sure what to do at this point. What did you use as a wedge?

Just jack up the truck off the trail hitch to relieve the pressure on the springs..Don't bring the wheels off the ground....Just raise it..

All I did was jamb a screw driver in between by hitting it with my palm..

I think the key is the kind of lube you use...

The krown undercoat spray in a can is incredible..

Good luck fellas....

This drove me nuts forever....2 trips to the dealer to be told it was the rubber bushings....And that it was normal...

Just spread your springs and look for rust on the shim tabs!

Is this the kind of sound you may hear backing out of your driveway at an angle? Right about the time one of the front wheels drops into the "gutter" on the side of the road?

Any kind of twist to the truck...Articulation...gutter crossings on an angle..

Try lubing the shims

Where did you get that rustcheck spray? Or what is something comparable? I'll be doing this the next time I have a driveway to work in.

I'm sure a fluid films or something would work, but I find this Rustcheck stuff last a real long time...

Good luck Burner.

no.

I don't even have the truck anymore...lol

It was lemon...this was another flaw I totally forgot about... you just reminded me.

If you look by the keepers on the middle leaf, there is a shim in between the leafs right there..

Spread in apart with a wedge, and apply BRAKE LUBE.

I did this after this thread, and it never came back... the rust check didn't last long

good luck
