How it feels

You can definitely feel your in a different mode... tow. It is a little slow getting up to speed... mind you I did not go 3/4 or so down on throttle... and push to higher revs (4.5-5k)... I just drove reasonable... just as well as it was foggy as all get out that night. Once up to speed it was like the camper wasn't even there for the most part given good road conditions. My over all thought was it did fine. As I recall feeling the same with the v8 regarding towing and putting the revs up. Better ride in the ford than dakota. Exhaust does howl putting you in a trance if radio not on... LoL How many miles on your truck? Like the 20.4 mpg and I can see me getting that here shortly.

I've got about 2400 right now.

I think that the 4X2's are going to see 20+mpg pretty easily. You've got to drive it like you want good fuel economy, but it can be done.

That's good to hear about towing. I've never towed anything before. I'm thinking about getting something very small for camping. Under 2000lb. Possibly under 1000lb. I shouldn't have any trouble with something this light.

I'm seeing 21mpg around town. I don't know if it's going to stay that way, but it's hitting 21mpg.

Lie-O-meter

Well, I've reached a first with this truck. For the first time the dash mpg was way off from the old school math.

Filled up today. Had used just over a half tank. Dash mpg's said 21.3. Old school math, and I had to check it twice because I thought that I must have done something wrong, said 22.52. I guess I better understand why some call it the lie-o-meter. It has been pretty damn accurate untill this fill up. Needless to say, I'm pretty happy with these mpg's so far.

My driving is probably 50% highway and 50% rural/suburban. I try to stay out of the city.

When I parked the truck tonight the onboard mpg's read a steady 23.9.

That's impressive... I drive like you from the sounds of it. I wonder what a reg cab 2wd 3.55 could do. Bet 24-26 highway easy at 65

I think your right about the 4X2 V6. If they could put 3.15's or a taller overdrive gear, I'll bet that with very conservative driving this V6 F150 could be knocking on 30mpg. I don't think they are going to do that though.

Hey, you eastern MA folks were spared the tornado. Tore up the place around here. Glad it missed our house, but a few blocks away..., different story.

Ok, so I've been towing a little 2000lb camper w/ my 2005 Grand Marquis once in a while, and I was seeing my miles per gallon numbers go from 25 mpg on the highway to around 10 or 11 mpg when I hook it all up. It's hard to generate enthusiasm for any kind of longer "camping trip" with those numbers. I like my car plenty but I am unhappy enough about the mpg business when towing that I am looking at trading in my Merc for the F150 3.7 V6. I am being offered a good deal, but I wonder how much I'm really going to improve that mpg if I make the trade. A few of these recent posts seem to suggest the F150 V6 may not be the answer, but maybe I'm looking at things wrong. Maybe there is no good answer for me, but I appreciate any thoughts anyone has as I am probably going to jump one way or the other soon. Thanks.

Chris

I can't really answer your question. If I had to guess though, I'd say that you could probably get in the 13-15mpg range with a new V6 F150. I think that the 6-speed auto is what's going to make the biggest improvement over the car.

I'd like to know because I'm trying to find a camper that weighs about 1000lbs. It's just a little two person but I want to get decent mpgs.

Go with a tent if you plan to go to katahdin. I have my new ride now. Only 200 miles so far , but many more to come.

I don't think that you can bring campers to Katahdin. Not very close to it anyhow. We'd plan on tenting for that one. Great picture by the way!

Really, we would like to be able to head out on a Friday night, after work, up to the Green, or White mountains, maybe head over to the Adirondacks, start a hike Saturday morning and then be home for dinner that night. It would be easier to do with a teardrop camper than to set up a tent at night and tear it down in the morning.

The truck looks great! I'd be interested in what you are going to get for mpg's.

How you liking it so far? Let us know when you take it on the trek up north.

Did 600 miles round trip to Maine home Sunday through Tuesday. 19.5 on the way up. This morning at work the read out showed 21.3 . Have 900 miles now. Steering feels like the volume **** on the radio. Told "the voice" to play Aerosmith and it called Gary Smith. Oh well, we had a good laugh. So far the truck works as advertised. I am a happy camper.
