Upgrading to 4.10 gears....

I would like to share my experience in upgrading my 2009 F150 gears, in hopes of helping others considering such.

Original gears = 3.31--->upgrade to 4.10 (with posi track)
Original RPMs at 70mph = 1800--->after upgrade RPMs at 70mph = 2150

I need the upgrade as the 6 speed transmission with 3.31 gears constantly switches between gears at the slightest incline using Tow/Haul mode while pulling my 30' travel trailer. Since I am near the max towing weight for the original truck configuration, I decided to upgrade to 4.10 gears.

After getting 4.10s installed, the speedometer read 90 mph when actually going 70 mph (verified using my Smartphone with GPS speedview). The shop that installed the gears nor any tire shop would assist with recalibrating my speedometer. Next option was to consider getting a compatible programmer with such options.

Per confirmation from BullyDog tech support, the BullyDog GT Gas was the option for me..............wrong. After installing and learning the speedo and gear ratio menu items missing, another call to BullyDog tech support proved BullyDog GT Gas does not allow this for Ford trucks....there exact words were "Ford owners do not use these options, but GM and Dodge do, so we excluded such for Fords"..........I was quite outraged as the original call to tech support stated this would work............returned for full refund..

I read online that the Ford Dealership can recalibrate speedometers...so off I go to my local Ford dealership for service. For a $95 programming fee, I agreed and anxiously awaited. After an hour, my washed truck was ready, with the comments.....we got very close. What? Per the mechanic, they could only recalibrate using up to 3.73 gears, as the Ford laptop program will not allow them to recalibrate using non-stock gear ratios. I basically got a $100 truck wash and still off by 10 mph on my speedometer..

I decided to call Edge Products and they also confirmed their Edge Evolution CS Gas is tuned for my truck including recalibrating the speedo and gear ratio. I have since installed my new Edge product and everything is working as desired. Wow, the difference in shift points is fantastic.

I also installed some Firestone Air Springs to soften the ride while towing, and these were fairly easy to install. I plan to pull my trailer this weekend and can't wait to feel the difference.

Thanks for reading, and I hope this helps others.

I would have payed the dealer for the car wash and told them they failed to do what was asked of them.

Im only going up a tire size on my 09 plat. But i was waiting for edge to come out with their programmer. On my 99 xlt 5.4 4x4. i had 192K on it before i installed the edge.. what a world of difference. I cant wait to get it installed. on my 99. running 75 rpms were around 2200. after programer rpms went down to 1900-1950. or so. if i remember correctly. not sure if the tq conv locked up better or what. i had 246K on it when i traded it in , along with my 05 gt. on new truck . wish i still had that 99. still looked and drove great.

good luck with the truck..

this is exactly what ive been waiting to hear about.
so what did it cost you and whats your new mileage like when not towing?

Maybe I missed it in your post, but what configuration truck do you have? 4x2, 4x4 (if so, lifted any or bigger tires?), s-cab, screw, short bed, long bed, etc.

What was the cost of the gear swap?

Hurry!

Answer to other's questions

* More truck specs....see my updated auto signature (5'-5" bed)

* Mileage with 3.31 gears (hwy) = 21mpg
Mileage with 4.10 gears (hwy) = 20 mpg
- with new gears, it hardly ever needs to down shift for overpasses, unlike the 3.31 gears where it was constantly shifting.

Gear upgrade costs = $1,000 (including posi track)
Edge Evolution CS = $450

I am pulling my travel trailer this weekend for the first time with the new gears, so I will post more soon.

Thanks, Lance for posting on this. Does the Edge Evolution allow you to change only the gear ratio / tire settings and leave the engine tuning alone? As in factory tune other than gear ratio?

TIA

LanceD 11-04-2010 06:42 PM

I used the "trans only" tune, which tweaks only the shifts points for more efficiency. Other tunes include...Towing and Performance, of which do modify engine parameters, and you always have the option of returning to factory settings.

Thanks- they owe you a sales commission now. :thumbsup:
