Future F-150 Diesel

Boy, I'm not sure who is screwed up here, but my latest issue of Truck Trend states that the F-150 being released in 2008 as a 2009 Model will have the diesel option. Not that it won't happen, but the funny part is it says it will be a 6.0L diesel. I can't imagine this - unless it is just coincidence that some all new diesel engine developed specifically for the F-150/Expedition is in fact a 6.0L. Obviously, the old 6.0L is history, but a 6.0L in a 1/2 ton would be incredible... especially since the new Isuzu developed (with GC block) will only be a 4.5L. Coooooome ooooooon baaaaaby! I'll be a gineau pig. If they booost the payload to 2,000#, all of you can get in line behind me!

I read that issue yesterday. It says they will be putting the 6.4-liter Power Stroke in the F150. The same diesel used in the Super Duty.

I knew Ford was putting a diesel in the 08-09 (whatever) F-150's but a 6.4!!!!!!!!!!

good lord.....

Is there really a point to putting that much of an engine in it?

Not AT ALL saying that I wouldn't buy it

*droool*

i've been holding off on totaling the KIA to spend the insurance money on an '09

EDMUNDS

The current 5.4-liter Triton V8 is getting replaced by Ford's new "Boss" engines that are expected to displace around 6.2 liters at the top end and around 5.4 to 5.6 liters on the low end. Expect horsepower numbers approaching 400 and similar levels of torque, as Ford wants to stay on top of Toyota's 5.7-liter V8. It delivers 381 hp and 401 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic, so expect six gears in the Ford's automatic transmission as well.

Actually, the Truck Trend says 6.4L with 350 HP and 650 torque. It also says in '09 as a '10 model. Truck Trend often has a lot of typos and misinformation. The engine size is obviously wrong as there is no way the new 6.4 will go in the F150. It is supposedly going to be out of the Super Duty in '10.

The same info is also in Motor Trend. However, both magazines are put out by the same company so their sources are the same.

Dodge is the only manufacturer between Ford, Chevy and Dodge to have already met the stricter emissions standards for 2010. One way or the other the 6.4-liter will not be the same motor for 2010 as it is today.

From a reliable source...

The 6.4 (and 6.0) is not going nor was it ever intended to go into the '09 F-150. It's too big. The only thing bigger about the cab is the front clip and the crew cab is getting 6" longer in back.

OK, the 6.4L is WAY to heavy for the F150. I want a V6 Diesel that will allow my truck to still tow what it can now, and get 20+ MPG. If I want the 6.4L, I'd buy the F250!

I think Ford should just start putting 6.4's in F150s... and then put like Cat C13 engines in the F250's and F350's... and just go all out and put a C15 in a F450... this way, there IS NO excuse to upgrade... all the power in the world at your finger tips.

As far as emissions go, just throw a DPF and some sensors, and they are good to go. The C15 for example... Cat is not going to redesign it for new emissions... they are going to adapt it... not build a totally new C15 just because federal and state emissions requirements change.

Well, another thing I forgot to include was the fact that they could have kept the 6.0l PS for a few more years. It already had what it needed to be more emissions compliant. All it needed was a few more sensors, some slightly different components, and of course a DPF. Why did Ford build a new engine? Cause the engineers don't look at what they've already got to work with.

Sometimes building something from scratch again, and again, isn't the best way to go. I found that by using some ingenuity and some true engineering skills, you can make what already exists better for a lot less. Not to mention, if the engineers would look into an easier conversion to meet the stricter emissions standards, they could have also had an upgrade to the previous owner's diesels to meet the new EPA standards. Which if Ford actually did... wow... the government and the people would give Ford the greenest thrumbs around. Not to mention the people that would spend the extra $1k to do the upgrade, might be entitled to a tax write off or something.

You know, people really don't think about certain things until it's already done. Then they are standing around looking like fools when they could have done 1/2 as much work to make 2x as much money. Fools... I tell ya, Fools.

Well I have two "asks" of the new baby diesel:

1) it doesn't require a huge price premium like its big brother. Couple 000 sure, 4-6000+ no way, gimme the new 6.2L.

2) It doesn't SUCK vs the competition like the 6.4 does. Every single comparo the new 6.4 is getting its doors blown off. Read the new Dec Popular Mechanics shootout... WOW we are slow.... and the Duramax was what 7mpg better empty and 3 loaded. Thats a huge diff. Part of that is due to 5 speed vs 6, but not nearly all. When you add in the perception of engine quality issues in with sub std performance, you really have to want to drive a Ford... Someone in the product group should be sent to Club Gitmo for this...
