Oil change time
Oil change time
Well I crawled under the truck this morning to see how bad it is going to be to do the first oil change on the 09 tomorrow and noticed something. On all the mustangs I have had over the years I used a cut open plastic bottle to "funnel" the mess away from the suspension to prevent a mess. When I looked at the 09 I saw they have what looks like a built-in catch tray/funnel idea. Am I seeing this right???
If so...

Yep, you are seeing it correctly. Just be prepared because depending on how your truck is sitting (by itself or up on ramps) will determine which way the oil will run. I did mine with my truck up on ramps and it ran fairly neatly down the back of the "funnel" right into my very large diameter oil catch pan. Oh, and you may want to lift some weights, borrow the Jaws of Life from your local fire department, rent a front end loader & tow strap, buy every kind of oil filter wrench you can find, and if you're religious, say several prayers to get off the factory filter. Mine was on TIGHT

. I've changed many filters over the years and I've never had that much trouble getting off a filter. Good luck

Well...heading out to change the oil...wish me luck!
well that wasnt fun!
But make it oil filter-0 Me-1
I ended up using a cheap oil filter wrench a nice cheater bar from the top and moving it a 1/4" at a time. But I do have to say the catch pan item they have installed was great!
pics show the set up I used and the magazine is there to show the size of the cheater bar.

note: please ignore the strange feet in the pics...lol

My "old" 92 F150, and the son's 95 F150 made sure you got oill all over the under carriage when changing the filter. Then I was glad when I 1st changed the oil in my wifes 02 Explorer with the "funnel" (daughter's Mountaineer too!). And they kept the trend for my (and your) 09 F150. Thanx FORD Engineers, an easy design that just makes so much sense.
Best I've seen : my Corvette, oil filter is verticle, so no spill @ all, and I fiil the new one prior to installation
Worst I;ve seen: my daughters former 92 Cherokee 4.0l oil filter is upside down!
(love the filter wrench cheater device)

You guys are *****'s. I can undo the filter with a bare hand
Never gonna even attempt this my self for the small amount of money they charge to do this. Not that i have to pay anything as i got 3 years free service or upto 45k miles thrown in for free.

Ozman, that was incredibly funny! Why? Because it was so true on my 2004, and I bet my '09 will be the same damn way!

Best suggestion: Hand-tighten to make next change easier.

Then the 2004. What a nightmare location, just awful. It had the drip catch thing too, but who cares if you can't actually reach the damn filter. I always changed it myself, but damn...
When I bought my 2009 I swore I would never go through Ford's oil filter process again. When i hit 7500 I just brought it to the dealer, and it turned out to be free anyways for me. But even when I have to start paying when I hit 15,000, it's worth it for the amount of hassle you save. I trade mine in every time a new model comes out anyways, so I'm not looking for my truck to last 37 years by doing everything perfectly myself either. Hell, I'm tempted to buy an '11 just because of the new EB engine and my wedding in June, and then trade up for an all-new '12 as usual.
