Hi All,

As I've read similar posts, as I tried to lower the drivers side window, i heard a pop and my window fell...the motor kept spinning when I pressed the window switch, but no action with the window.

I've read a lot of posts in a couple forums regarding the failure of the window motor/regulator assembly, and since "pictures say 1,000 words", I decided to document for anyone on the fence for this DIY replacement. I won't cover the door panel removal since that has been previously documented.

I was originally concerned about replacing myself because the first DIY article mentioned taking out the window, which in itself concerned me, but after a few reads, its not necessary, and the window motor/regulator assembly is very easy to replace with simple tools. Total time: 80 leisurely min. (door panel removal (30min), assembly removal/replacement (20min), and door panel intallation (30min).

Ford PN 4L3Z-1823201-CA for 2004 Drivers Side SCAB $130 at dealer. Cheaper online, but would rather see what I was purchasing incase I accidently ordered the wrong part, plus after 3 days, it was driving me crazy.

1. Manually push the window up all the way and tape to hold the window in place. I used 2 inch painters tape.

Here is a picture of the clamp (one on each side holding the window to the tracks via T30 Torx bolt, before I manually pushed the window up.


2. There are two vertical slots (hightlighted red) where you can use a T30 Torx bit to loosen the two clamps that attach the window to the tracks. Then you can pull down the loosened left side clamp and both will lower/release from the glass window (held in place with the painters tape). Use caution to loosen and pull down so the window doesn't also follow. Then there are 5 bolts (four at each end of the two tracks, and one that holds the window motor/regulator (3 highlighted in yellow, other two lower out of pic frame).


3. After you unbolted the two window clamps and 5 bolts holding the assembly in place, you can collapse the assembly through the opening. Easy to maneuver, I took the right side out first then the left side, just dont forget to unplug one wiring connector to the window motor/regulator, its easier to unplug at the outer wiring harness, here i pointed to the actual window motor/regulator connection.


Old assembly removed.


4. Insert the new assembly, position to loosely install the 5 attachment bolts, plug in the wire connector, plug in the window switch and raise the two track clamps till they are seated to the glass, then tighten the T30 torx bolts on the two clamps. Finally tighten the 5 attachment bolts, and test the window action a few times to make sure the glass is seated properly and firm in the clamps. Test the window before you button up the door panel.

As also documented by Lariatf150....the plastic tab in the window motor/regulator broke, hence the "pop." All cables, and pullies were in place and working fine.

Yesterday on the way to work going 35mph, I slammed my p-side mirror against another mirror of a landscaping truck illegally parked in the far right lane against the curb on a busy street. I hope I F'ed up that guys mirror good! :

It pushed the mirror assembly back, but cracked the mirror and the little amber indicator strip popped off! No luck to find the part number of that little amber led strip, or on ebay.

So i'll be writing up another DIY shortly.

awsome write up ,im ordering my regulator tonight from parr ford ,hope to get it installed next weekend ,i hate being paranoid when cops drive by me on the road since i cant roll down my tinted drivers window,thanks for the help

 

Thanks for the info. I paid for the first two windows that went out. The third dropped yesterday. I will fix it myself this time.

Nice write up, had mine go out few months ago. Dealer charged $750 to repair, luckily I was still under warranty.

 

Thanks for the post. I gave my daughter my 05 supercrew. she called at 12 today and said the rear window fell. Storms were coming through so after I saw your post I pulled the rear door apart , went to the dealer and $208 for the part and fixed it in about 3 hours including going to the dealer. Started to rain just when I buttoned it up. I found some suction cups for X mas decorations I had laying around and used them to hold the window. Now she carries a couple with her in case a window drops . this is the second window at 77k miles.

 

I've had to pay for 2 also hopefully it doesnt happen again but if it does I'll know what to do

 

this just happened to me yesterday, im hoping my extended warranty covers this! i would rather not mess with it myself

 

Just replaced mine on my '05 SCREW. Intimidated at first but after loosening the window clamps and the 5 support blots things just kind of flowed. This really is an easy installation. Thanks for the awesome directions and the time it took to post.

 

I helped my dad do his yesterday, and have done one on mine myself. Its really not that bad of a job.
