2005 stx 6 lug 4wd rear differential size
 

Hey folks,
I have a leaking rear differential as well as a leak coming fron the left sode of the axle. I am somewhat mechanically able but a differential rebuild is far beyond my skillset. I am wanting to get the differential replaced. I am pretty sure it is a 3.55 gear ratio but the door sticker does not say. What do i need to watch out for when looking for a new rear end? Are there any other models compatible with mine? Im trying to save as much money as possible so this will probably be a junkyard pull. Thabks in advance

There is an axle code on the door jam sticker that will tell what ratio it is and if it has traction lock. There should be a couple of tags on the rear diff cover that will tell you the ring gear size and if it is a TL rear. There are also axle codes on those stickers. Read the door tag axle code and the rear diff tag codes an post them here and we will be able to tell you what you should have.

I'd think just having a shop repair the rear end is going to be cheaper than buying a junkyard rear end (probably just a blown seal). I'd have it looked at first before you start calling around to junkyards for rear ends with unknown histories and the PITA it is to get it all swapped over.

The only time a new (reused) axle is recommended is if it's bent, or something way beyond repair.

Take it to a shop that works on rear ends.

You talking about a pinion seal leak maybe?

And a leak on left side? Axle tube to center casting or at vent or at axle end where brakes are? It's not abnormal to see dampness at the first two, like a misty look. If axle lube leaking at seal and you see it on tire, that's an axle seal needs R&R.

Our Mustang was leaking or seaping at the pinion seal, I changed vent (had a cap with light spring over disc to relieve pressure) to just a hose run up into frame in a loop, no cap, no more seapage either.

Yeah its leaking from front but diff. Case has a crack in it too. To be honest i have no idea its been that way

That makes no sense. The axle code on the door jamb sticker will be 2 numbers or one letter and one number.

If you have a 4.2 or 4.6 it's a 8.8" axle, if it's a 5.4 you have a 9.75" axle.

The tag on the diff itself will have a 88 or 975 on it somewhere.
