Engine replacement
My '05 regular cab FX-4 has 141,018 miles on the clock, the only problem currently is the cam phaser tick.
My question is, when the 5.4 finally gives up the ghost to the point it can't be repaired inexpensively and buying a new truck is prohibitively expensive (base model, two wheel drive XL F-150 is $27,705). Am I required to replace the 5.4 with the same or could I install a 5.0 or a diesel*? *Of course, if I go with one of these, the engine swap would be well after emissions are required. |
You can swap anything you want, with enough time, money, and expertise. I think your best bet is a reman 5.4 with a good warranty, or a new/used truck.

Exactly as glc put it.

I've checked around and likely will go with a new 5.4 that has a warranty and has already taken care of the cam phasers.

replaced my 5.4 last august, had 298,000 on it when i did, got a reman for $3100, 4 year unlimited mileage warranty, they actually called it a million mile warranty
