04 5.4l 3v Strange Clicking

Hello All,

I just installed a rebuilt engine with OEM timing set this past weekend and I've got this weird clicking sound down by my gas pedal. You can really hear it when it gets to 1K RPM. Maybe fuel injectors? I've got a P0325 code so I'll be putting in new knock sensors this weekend along with all new pulleys. Since I'll have the intake off I'll be pulling out the injectors and cleaning those. I really don't know what to do.

Here's a link of the sound:

What do you think?

Thank you,

Ken

That clicking noise is coming from your timing chains and valve train.

Thank you ManualF150.

Even if the timing set is new and the heads and block are rebuilt? Wouldn't I hear it on the outside of the engine?

Thank you

Ken

I would also add that this clicking sound is like the sound you get when your battery is dying and your gauges click. I actually thought that's what it was. You can actually barely hear it when the key is turned on before starting.

I heard it on the outside of engine. If you listen, you can hear it.

Thank you ManualF150 - Last weekend I replaced the knock sensors and the the 3 idler pulleys and tension pulley and the sound went away....except when it's in reverse. As soon as I shift it into reverse the sound comes back slightly and gets louder as I accelerate.

Could it be cv or IWE?

Thank you,

Ken

It won't be CVs or IWE in reverse standing still.

Thank you ManualF150 - I should have said by acceleration I meant moving in reverse. The faster I go the louder it gets. I have a long driveway to backup. Once I get on the street and put it in drive it goes away. Sorry for my lack of explanation.

Thank you,

Ken

It could be the CVs or it could be the driveshaft.

Put it up on jack stands, and put it in reverse, and go underneath and listen. To test the CVs, put it in MFWD, get back underneath and listen.

Whatever you do, DON'T touch the driveshaft(s) while its in rotation, for hopefully obvious reasons.

Sorry for the confusion...

I meant to say 4wd/4x4.

I was working on another forum that deals with tractors... which on tractors is what is called Mechanical Front Wheel Drive. Same basic principle.

Thank you glc. How is that different from what I have now? I just turn a switch for 4x4.

Thank you,

Ken

It's not different - just put it in 4wd.
