Aftermarket muffler that isn't too obnoxious?

Hey everyone, I need a new muffler (only) and was thinking about going with an aftermarket one.

Does anyone have recommendations for one that isn't too loud? I'd like something that's not overly loud, but you definitely would know it's not stock.

Any input is appreciated! :)

For what you describe, I would recommend an oval Magnaflow and just piece it in to replace your factory unit......

So that will sound better than stock? A little louder and 'gruntier' but not obnoxious? Also, are there different models, or is it just any oval Magnaflow muffler? My truck is bone stock, 5.4 2004 FX4.

Thanks for the help! :)

Yes -- I think that would describe the Magnaflow perfectly. Keep in mind that generally speaking, the longer the muffler you purchase the less sound you will get -- I think they have 3 or 4 different lengths for their oval mufflers.

FWIW -- I put a Magnaflow catback system on mine shortly after I bought it -- SIDO oval muffler. I ended up replacing it with a different Magnaflow system (round muffler with side exit) because I wanted a little more growl. Keep in mind that my truck is not a daily driver so a little more cab noise was fine with me -- if it was my daily driver I probably would have stuck with the first system I put on the truck.

Awesome, thanks! So I guess I'll just get one that matches the dimensions of the stock unit the closest.

Flow master 50 on my 2004 f150 4.6 v8 sounds great on take off but nice when cursing down the road. Had muffler shop cut off old one and weld in new one with extra pipe and support bar hangers(a must!) or it will crack off! Still single exhaust too.

I bought factory Raptor take off exhaust for my 2014. Very subtle, just a little more volume/tone over factory muffler

My cousin did the same thing when he had his 2006 5.4 Fx4

Does anyone use good ole glasspacks anymore?

+1 for oval straight through magaflow. The longer you go, the quieter it gets. Sounds like a 22" would be about what you're looking for.

For a 2004 with the 4 cat system, id go for an 18" case to actually hear it, but still remain calm.

Yes but they are called "resonators" today.........I have been running Allied units on every vehicle for 30+ years. Allied is a national mfg that supplies just about every muffler shop in the US.

Hmm so 18" or 22"? lol

So is Magnaflow better than Dynomax? Dynomax seems a lot cheaper.

Thanks!

I have a dynomax Ultra flo-X. It gives good sound, and isn't obnoxious.

Hey guys, I'm finally ready to buy, so just have a few more questions that I would love some help with.

Ok, so I measured the stock muffler and it's 32" long! lol So if I go with a 18" or 20" muffler, isn't that a HUGE difference in length? What would I do about the hangers?

Also, it looks like the stock pipe diameter is 2.5". Is that correct?

And if I do go with a 18" Magnaflow, would this be the one I want?

Thanks for all the help guys, it's very appreciated!

Are you hanging it yourself or are you going to take it to a shop?
