FPDM gone bad after car wash

So I washed my truck yesterday and it ran great until this morning. Started it up let it run about 10 min. I put it in reverse and it absolutely had NO power off idle. After some cussing I pulled codes from my Edge P0191 and P1237. After some brief searching it pointed to the FPDM. So dropped the spare and found the problem. So my concern is I had to go to Advance Auto and buy a Dorman replacement. I would rather have Motorcraft but it's Sunday and I need my truck tomorrow. Advance does NOT accept returns if it's been used. Anyone have any bad experience with the Dorman? Truck seems to be running great again. The weather conditions couldn't be better for changing it 15 degrees and snowing

Sometimes you're stuck and have to go with aftermarket. I've read about a higher number of failures with the Dorman fpdm, but I do hope you don't have any problems.

I replaced my fpdm with a motorcraft years ago, before it failed, as preventative maintenance. Therefore, I don't have any personal experience with the Dorman part, just going by what I've read.

I've used a couple other Dorman parts that failed early and have since refused to use anything by them anymore.

Thanks for the reply 2008_XL. I ended up buying a Motorcraft online anyway. After it comes I'll see what I can do with this Dorman I just bought.

I'm sure if you just wipe if down, you could eBay it and get most of your money back.

The Dorman FPDM - as well as most Dorman parts - have a pretty bad reputation for long term quality. They're basically the parts you use when you have no money or you're going to sell the vehicle shortly.

So will a Dorman unit work in the short term? Yes. Would I want one on my truck for the long haul? No way! (When my FPDM went on my 2005, I replaced it with an OEM unit.) If you can wait for the OEM unit, it will be well worth it.

I did some reading after the first post and I found a lot of negative about the Dorman. This is what made me get back online and buy OEM. We do a lot of camping in the summer and the last thing I need is getting stranded with the TT.

Unfortunately I had to install the Dorman so I could get to work tomorrow. But I will try and return it to Advance anyway. Appreciate the replys

Keep the doorman, and toss it in your gloveblox as a spare.

Easier yet, keep the Dorman on, throw the Motorcraft in the glovebox. Swap when and if it goes bad. If the Dorman still works when you get rid of the truck, sell it as a new never used item for close to what you paid for it.

I think you fellas are right. Probably should just keep it. It's 100% obvious it has been mounted anyway. Who knows... maybe I can help a broke down friendly ford owner on one of our travels.

One other issue. I've put about 15 miles on it since I changed it and the idle seems lower then normal in drive. In park it's fine. I wonder if I should have disconnected the battery before I replaced it? (It was very cold and was in a hurry) I just cleared the codes was all.

The idle will relearn itself in a while.

X2 that!

Or do as GLC said .... use the MC as a spare.

You know OEM can fail and having a spare for yourself isn't the worst option .... especially camping.

Also ..... read the threads on FPDM and either use the Ford stand off kit of make up your own .... but get the FPDM up away from the frame rail.

After a 40 mile round trip to work the idle seems to be back to normal.

Dorman FPDM here since late 2011, no issues here. Granted since 2013 I have not daily driven the truck and it never sees elements of nature anymore, it has been fine for me. I prefer plastic over metal if it's going to rot out.

I probably would have been just fine with the Dorman but for as much driving I do I didn't want to chance it. But now It's in the counsel as a backup. I'm not sure why Ford didn't make the whole housing out of plastic. I've got so much time and money into this truck I'm going to have to drive the wheels off it.
