The "new style" he's referring to is used in the new style heads, which were used on engines built after late fall 2007. 2008 model year trucks could have either style, depending on when the engine was built. You can't use the Motorcraft 1 piece plugs in the old style heads.

Which plugs would you guess are in a reman engine installed in Feb 2014?

I think(?) they used the old boots from the dead engine, guess l will have to ask them to look. This truck is getting to be a PITA but the body is in too good of shape and I don't use it enough anymore to justify a new one. Probably should stop my griping.

Why not just remove a plug and see what you have?

No sure way to tell without pulling one. Boot color only applies to factory cops, aftermarkets could be any color.

If the engine is new or you have low miles on it there's little to no risk breaking a plug.
Like Bluejay just pull one to be sure

I was told I don't qualify since I replaced them on my own at 100k (no breakage) and then at 153k when they started misfiring at the dealership. Oh well.

Spark Plugs & Cam Phaser Issue

I received my notice on the spark plug issue recently. My had the plugs changed at the dealer several months ago at a cost of over $600....after thay felt sorry for me and knocked a bit off the total. They said it would be a pain and costly and sure enough, nearly all the plugs broke and had to be extracted. My other and larger concern is the pending "cam phaser" issue that will soon render my otherwise sound 2004 F150 useless. For the life of me, i cannot figure out why the american auto makers, especially Ford, would build such beautiful vehicles only to have simple engineering issues at the factory cause so much expensive customer consternation. My 2004 truck still has a near new interior and contempory styling ect. but has had exepsive to fix and annoying problems, i.e., window regulators on all four window, the spark plug issue and now the cam phaser. Do we know of any pending settlement on the cam phaser issue??

My dad waited till 170k before he changed his. Truck was barely running which forced the issue. He broke 1 plug but was able to get it out using the tool.

He did it himself.

$830 / 7.5 hours billing for a spark plug change? What the hell is wrong with you Ford??

Really don't know if I qualify. I'm the 3rd owner and had the plugs replaced a month ago.

My truck is an 08' with the FlexFuel motor with a production date of 02/08/2008. Would it be safe to say that mine has the newer style heads/plugs and should be safe? What other indicators are there of the newer style plugs?

Nope. You could have either. If they have never been changed, black COP boots is old style, brown COP boots is new style.

Just got my settlement check...$34 and change...ARE YOU KIDDING ME FORD ??? I have owned nothing but F100/F150s all of my life, had to pay ford nearly $600 to replace the plugs after 2 broke on me. I figured "Hey ford is owning up to the problem and going to reimburse everyone for the problem"...34 dollars. Part of the settlement was for owners to mail in -Original- paperwork, so now I don't even have proof. (yes I made copies)
Well after this fiasco I hope a Ford rep reads this. I will seriously consider a GM vehicle when I buy next time. Bye Bye Ford.

In case you haven't already figured it out, the only ones who make any money on a Class Action lawsuit are the lawyers. They make millions arguing in your behalf - and then you get $34.00 for your troubles. Make more sense now?
