Thinking of upgrading, What year?

I've got a 02 4.6 5spd scab at the moment. Aside from spitting out a plug its been a good truck. Kinda tired of bangin gears and getting up there in mileage would like something newer.

My brother has an '08 that's developed the cam phaser issue. So in researching it seems this or timing issues affect the 04-09 5.4's. I assume the up to 06' 4.6's are ok? being they were still a 2 valve motor.

A 4.6 with a 4 speed auto seems pretty lame though.

I'd love a 5.0 but it's stretching my budget quite a bit.

I know this problem doesn't affect every truck, but I've never been much of a gambler.

Any insight/advice is greatly appreciated!

If you get an 04-08, look for a 4.6 2 valve. Unless you get a real heavy model - such as a 4wd Screw - it has adequate power unless you tow a lot.

I have an '05 regular cab-short box with the 5.4 and have always found the performance of this configuration somewhat underwhelming considering it is the "big" engine in the "small" body of this particular truck.

Back in '09 when I was trying to decide if I was going to buy a new Ranger or a "poverty-spec" F-150 as my new work truck, I test drove several 2009 XL F-150's with the 4.6 Triton. At the time, I remember thinking that the 4.6 engine paired with the new transmission actually performed better than the 5.4 that was in my '05.

Based on my experience, I would not hesitate to get one of the 12-generation trucks with the 4.6 Triton as a solid "general use" truck.

On A Side Note: I ended up going with the Ranger as my new work truck because of fuel mileage considerations. Since then I have averaged around 21 mpg with the Ranger, which I think I would have been hard-pressed to duplicate in an XL F-150 with the 4.6......

These trucks are by no means awful. Aside of spark plugs, fuel modules, mild IWE & injector issues, they are ok. 2007/2008s seem most problem free.

However, if you can get into a 2011+, do it. Much better engines, 6spd transmissions, and nice higher trim options.
