F250 with 5.4?

How would a 05 f250 with a 5.4 compare to an f150 with a5.4? As far as towing, fuel mileage, etc? I really like the super duty body style, do NOT need a diesel, and can't justify the gas mileage for the v10. I'm wondering if an f250 with the 5.4 would be a better hauler than my 05 f150 with 5.4 and 3.55.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Honestly with the added weight of the f250 i betcha the V10 will get the same if not a little better mileage. I had a 00 V10 Crewcab Long Bed 5 speed and got around 13 to 14mpg all the time, best all time was 16mpg.

Towing our Jayco 5th wheel was 10mpg

It's hard to find a used v10 with low mileage near me.

The 5.4 in a F-250 is a bit on the slow and thirsty side.

Of course it's slower, the truck is a lot heavier.

I would have thought the super duty transmission would help the 5.4 move the bigger truck better.

If you're talking "daily driver," forget the F-250. The 5.4 is much more at home in the lighter F-150. So compared to a similarly equipped F-150, you can expect this with an F-250 and the 5.4:

- Worse gas mileage
- Worse acceleration
- Higher insurance rates
- Higher registration costs (in most states)
- Higher part prices for normal wear items (like brakes)

Yes, the F-250 is a great truck, but 3/4 & 1 ton trucks are built for work - hauling, towing, snow plowing, etc. They just aren't designed to be efficient daily drivers. The F-150 on the other hand is designed for daily driver use - along with lighter duty hauling.

Agreed with what everyone said. The 5.4 Super Duty is dependable, but it is costly. Its slow, heavy, and still not as good as having the V10. The transmission isn't meant to shift any better, its meant to handle more strain than the 4r70 & 4r75w ever could handle. With all that and the Super Duty chassis comes firmness and low fuel economy. Go for the V10, travel far to find one if needed, or stick with the 5.4L 3v in a 6'5 bed.

I have a friend with an '05 F250 with the 5.4. Overall his truck seems bullet proof and dependable.
The only thing he hates about his truck is that it is sluggish and averages 12mph.

He's currently looking to trade for a diesel.

Diesel or V10 is the only option for me with a SuperDuty. To be honest, I'd only actual purchase one with the diesel, personally. The value of a SD truck with a 5.4L makes it not worth the trouble.

The 6.2 in the 2011+ is a pretty gutsy engine. Makes the 5.4 look like a slug.

A Superduty with the 5,4 is more intended to haul stuff...not tow.

My father in law just picked up a loaded 2014 F350 4 Door with the 6.2 and I am entirely unimpressed with it.

So is he haha .... on the other hand he has his work dump (F 550 6.7) all tuned up and the thing is a beast!

But I'm not sure I would be happy with the 6.2 over my F 150 and the 5.4 because it really feels just as slow .... and I'm 6" up.

We should have a drag race sometime to see

Just my opinion here, but FWIW, I wouldn't touch a Super Duty with a gas engine. If you need the added towing capacity of the SD platform, I would think you want the gobs of added torque the Diesel provides... The 5.4 just seems like not enough engine for the truck itself.
