Truck wouldn't shift into 4x4 this morning

I think I somewhat know the problem, but I wanted to get the thoughts of other members before I dive into this this evening.

I was leaving for work this morning and backed into some wet grass on a decline. Not wanting to put much effort into getting turned around, I attempted to shift into 4 HI. Nothing happened. No 4x4 lights on the dash lit up, no sounds, nothing. At that moment I remembered running a diagnostic on the truck after changing the spark plugs and a code had come up with something about a "transfer case ground" issue. Didn't pay much attention to it at the time (one battle at a time). I'll have to run it again when I get home, but I was running late for work this morning so I didn't have the chance.

I've read about the P1867 codes and the symptoms sound similar. I know this usually ends in replacing the transfer case shift motor but I don't want to get ahead of myself. Just wanted to get the opinion of others so I somewhat know how to approach this.

Thanks in advance guys.

From a guy who deals with this on a daily basis, I can tell you that you are on the right track. But be sure on the code first then go from there.

Typically P1867 leads to be a shift motor complaint, but I've also seen corrosion and wiring harness wear cause this.

Thanks R1Jester, I haven't looked under the truck yet to see exactly what I'm dealing with on this motor (if it comes to that) but is it a pain to change or is it pretty easy to get to?

You can try tapping on it lightly to "unstick" it. If you are mechanically inclined, it can be done; there are some step by steps on some forums. If you are going to be unsure its best to do your research or get it done at the dealer.

Just as I thought, it threw the codes P1867 "Transfer Case contact plate general circuit failure and P1891 "Transfer case contact plate ground return open circuit".
Tapped the motor, it unstuck. The motor seems weak shifting into 4 Lo so I ordered a new one from Rock Auto. I've always had trucks with the transfer case level in the floor so this is new.

In addition, you should "exercise" the shift motor at least monthly by shifting the 4x4 system through all ranges to prevent it from sticking in the future.

Yeah VTX, when I was tinkering with the truck in the garage my buddies were giving me hell saying my truck and I had gone all "city" on them and that I wasn't using the 4wd enough. So that's not a bad idea at all!
