Gear Alloy Blackjacks

17x9 with +18 offset. Tires are 285/70/17. Trying to decide which size tires to go with next, either 305/70/17 or 305/60/17. Def. want AT's around 33".

BFG's are the smoothest and most quiet. Like the raptors

i had 305/70/17's on my leveled truck before i went lift and 35's. its a good size. about a 33.8" tire, fills the fender well

Looks good!

First off, I LOVE that particular look. Never seen those specific rims, but they look awesome on a red truck like that.

Judging from your front shots, it looks like your offset / backspacing is more set the inside than my pro comps. I bet you can pull off 35s with no rub at all with that setup.

If I wanted an AT tire in 33", I would go with BFG All Terrain TA. Smooth as silk on the road, good traction offroad in all conditions shy of seriously nasty mud, which sadly dirt roads in Texas turn into during foul weather. We are presently getting outflow from that TS that is hitting mexico right now, and we need to go to a friends in Manvel tomorrow. I wouldn't think of going that way without muds... Espcially since the last mile or so is down just graded dirt, not even gravel, and through a hard pack dirt drive. Last time I did that trek with the ATs, it made it, but I got a lot looser than I liked when my wife is with me...

If you are going to consider an MT, and have a dealer nearby, I can honestly vouch for the Hercules Trail Digger MT... I didn't know exactly what to expect when I got my first set, but their performance and honestly, durability even with bad suspension (since fixed) have got me good and sold. And it is kind of nice not having the same belly button tires everyone else is running...

I'm definitely looking at a 33-34 inch tall all-terrain tire, slightly wider than the 285/70/17. I'm deciding between the BFG, Toyo ATII, and Nittos and sizes between 295/70 and 305/70. Prolly settle with 295/70/17s and a regear to 4.10s in the spring.

dbhost 09-21-2013 06:47 PM

Just FWIW, 305/70 17 is still an odd size, pretty hard to come by. And spendy when you do find them except in maybe Maxxis tires... Are you looking for more width than a 285/70R17 gives you? If I recall 285/70R17 at least in BFG AT runs 33.2x11.5, which is right in your range. I ran them for a long time with my 3.55s and no real problems. I wouldn't think you would want to regear unless you tow a lot...

I don't have any experience with Toyo light truck tires, but they do make pretty good passenger car tires. Or at least they used to a long time ago. My last set was a set of Toyo F7s on my 1976 Toyota Celica when I was in college in the 90s...

I'm a believer in milder road tires in most cases. They are smoother last longer and generally give you a better experience throughout their longer life. I like Michelins, BFG Rugged Trails, etc

If I need or want a more aggressive tire I want a true mud tire. AT tires seldom do very well when the going gets tough. It's not their fault they just don't have the big voids necessary to pull a heavy truck through mud and over obstacles.

That said I bought new tires yesterday for my F150 and I bought Nitto Terra Grapplers. Partly because I see set after set everyday running down the road, and partly because everyone seems to think they are a great tire. Only the bad words I heard were from my local Goodyear Dealer. He couldn't give me any specifics others than to say he wouldn't buy them. Of course the same guy has told me the same thing about Michelins for years.

I bought 285/65R18 on a set of XD +18 Monsters. As of this writing I have about 200 miles on them. One hundred fifty driving home last night (maybe 50 of it in moderate rain) and the remainder running around town today.

So far I am very impressed. All I can attest to at this point is to their road manners and they are excellent. They are incredibly smooth and quiet. Hug the road in the wind better the BFGs I took off.

The front two took no weight to balance and the other two took very little. I have never had a tire balance out without any weight so I had them remove them from the machine and try it Several times with the same result.

I haven't seen enough to know much but so far I'm a believer. The only thing I'm really cautious about is the dealer only put 35 psi in them and told me to try that for awhile. I'm scared to leave them that low ( load range e, 80 psi max rated) but I haven't touched them other than to chalk a line to make sure they were touching all the way across the tread.

I've had a set of Toyo and two sets of Nittos. I don't need MT's at all. Nitto makes a 295/70. Never had a flat or any problem to speak of with either. The sidewall of the new toyos look good.

I really want a true 33x12.50x17. I think it would really look strong. If I go with anything bigger than 285/70/17 it will get 4.10 gears.

I'm currently only putting only 5-6K miles on it a year so I will have it for a few years. I do pull a boat and ATVs.

dbhost 09-22-2013 04:01 PM

You will want a tire in either 33x12.50/17 or 305/65R17 to get the size you want. I do not know Toyo or Nitto tires well enough to know if you can get either of those brands in that size. 285/70R17 gets the diameter you want, but is 1" narrower than you are asking for. I had 285s in BFGoodrich on my truck for a few years. Loved the tires, diameter was fine, but the width drove me batty. I just HAD to have 12.5" on the truck to look right to me... When I got my first set of 35x12.50/17 Hercules, they didn't have a33x12.50/17. They do now. Since you aren't going for muds though, kind of a moot point to mention it...

About the only AT style tires I know if in the size you want are BFGoodrich, and ProComp... Of the two, The BFG is the winner in my book. Not a fan of ProComp tires...

I found a set of OEM 20's from an FX4 with new 295/60/20 Nitto Terra Grapplers. Pics coming soon. I pick them up tomorrow. I'm stoked!

Oooh perfect size for a leveled 4x4! That'll look really good!

I remember this thread right when I opened it and saw your truck.

Waiting on lug nuts to arrive...
