New member here. Assuming everything checks out, I'll be buying a 2005 Lariat Screw 4x4 next Saturday. It has just under 70K miles so I've been doing a good bit of research on known problems so I know what to look for when I do the inspection. Naturally ball joints, spark plugs, and the cam phasers popped up on my radar.

As far as the phasers go, I saw one recommendation from a Ford tech to use heavier weight oil. That got me thinking, would a better solution be a higher volume/pressure oil pump? Does such a part even exist? How hard is the oil pump to get to on this engine?

I've always wanted a truck and this will be my first. I'd love to have a new Ecoboost but that's far out of my ability to afford until the kids are out on their own.

 

I would recommend just running what is recommended for it, and use a motorcraft filter. I think a lot of people's problems come from wrong viscosities and filters.

 

If the phasers are quiet now, they should stay quiet if you use only the recommended oil and filter (Motorcraft 5W20 and FL820S) and change it every 3 to 5k.

 

So Far I have not had any Cam Phaser Issues Currently @ 89,000 miles & Purchased truck new in 2005 it has always had only Motorcraft 5w20 Synthetic Blend & a Motorcraft FL 820 S Filter & Oil is changed by Me Every 3000 miles,I would Stick with the 5w20 if I were you.

 

Diid'nt the o5's have injector problems as well on a few. But if it has 70k then it probally is fixed by now....

Does anyone know if the 4.6L in mid 2000's Crown Vics have the same type of cam phasers? I'm LEO and we've never had a problem with any of our patrol car engines.

 

no, those were 2 valves. they had spark plug blow outs.

 

Mid 2000's didn't even have very many blowout issues, the heads were revised in 2003 to double the number of threads.

 

Are there any Ford techs in here that I could give the VIN to so they can run an Oasis report for me to find out if issues like the cam phaser have been done on the truck? Carfax shows some maintenance but those are not listed.

 

If you stop by your local Ford dealer and be nice to the service advisor, you could probably get an OASIS.

 

Change the oil dead on every 3k miles. Use Motorcraft 5w20 and a Motorcraft filter you shouldn't have a issue out of them.
