Yes, search. It is a cam phaser issue.

I am not 100% certain, I believe it is harmless if you decide to live with it. I did with my 2004 5.4L and it ran fine. Timing chains should be changed out every 75k I have heard however. Just a preventive maintenance procedure.

The truck has a lot of miles so I'll do the phasers and I'll check the play in the chains and the chain guides and I'll go from there.

Congrats on the high miles! I wouldnt frown at any needed repairs at a quarter million miles.

Good for you

I'd question going through all that on an engine that has that many miles on it - I'd probably drive it till it quits then replace the engine or junk it.

^^^ This.

Most all 5.4 3v engines have the cam phaser knock. Mine does, it's normal, and my engine runs like a top. Also the fuel injectors on ALL 5.4 3v engines are noisy. Same deal, normal.

I ain't skeered.

So I just did a short trip, about a 10 min drive to a friends house ran fine the whole way. When I got to the house the truck died out.... and it did the same thing when I got home... not swell... any ideas? No leaks, all gauges are fine and no CEL

I think you are talking about timing belts, not chains.

My point is you don't change timing chains every 75K miles, only belts.
