Towing Q's

My friend located a nice MasterCraft X7 boat in the Sacramento area for a great price. He asked me to help him go get it, he'll cover all the gas. So, we will be towing it home to Portland from Sac. I'm just wondering if this will be too much for my 4.6 considering I have 35's? My truck is set up with trailer brakes and whatever tow package from Ford. I think the boat weighs 5,500 lbs plus the trailer. Thoughts?

If this won't be a joy, I'll go borrow my bro in-law's 07 Dodge cummins.

What gears do you have?

BTW, The MC X7 weighs 3070 lbs, and add probably 1K for the trailer. Total package will be less than 5K lbs even with full fuel and any gear they have on board.

I am unsure about the exact boat model, just know its a really nice MastCraft. Friend said it is about 21ft and around 5,500. I have 3.73 gears. I know there's lots of big mountain ranges between Portland and Sacramento.

The only boats MC makes that are even over 4K lbs are the X-35 and up, and they are 24'+ boats. You'll be fine, although you should still swap your gears out with those 35's to save your transmission. 4.10's would be okay, but 4.56's would be the best size to get you back to stock gearing.

I know the 35's are bogging me down a bit. I want to regear but am unsure about 4.56 or 4.10. I might go back down to 33's once these tires wear down so if I think 4.56 may be too much for 33's. I have no reason to throw 35's back on besides for looks.

You could probably do it, but it would put an awful strain on your truck the way it is currently set up. If my bro n law had a dodge cummins and would let me borrow it, I'd go for that in a flash.

Go borrow the Dodge, the tow will be a lot smoother.

If I was your BIL and you came asking to borrow my truck to help your friend, not mine, because your F150 wouldn't do it as easily .... I'ld suggest your friend rent a large U-haul and take that instead and I'ld offer to go along with y'all if he'ld also agree to buy my meals at Chick-fil-As.

:)

Yeah, that Cummins my BIL has is beast, torque on that thing feels like it could yank a tree right out of the ground. Too bad the overall truck isn't put together well. Not bashing at all, but that motor in a Ford body would be supreme.

Not going to need it or my truck at all now. Looks like the deal on the boat fell through upon inspection. Oh well, would have been fun to do a road trip.

Sorry, I don't know anyone else with a F150 at all. I did test drive a 5.4 with an Edge before I bought my truck. Hard to say if it made a difference because it had 35s and I didn't really open it up.

I actually just bought an Edge and it's being shipped now and will be delivered next week so I'll see if it's worth it. From all he post I've read, I think 90% of the people who have a tuner will vouch for it. I bought mine used for $250 so I figure if I don't like it, someone will buy it off me.
