2006 F-150 Alternator died, Now won't shift
 

Ok definitely need some help if anyone can offer it.

Was driving home one night and my alternator died. Dash started flashing, engine shut down, the whole nine yards. I was not even able to turn the lights off they got stuck on until the battery completely died, and I know some strange things can happen when a vehicle completely dies.

So I got the truck towed home and replaced the battery and alternator. Now this is where it gets weird. I start it and it starts right up no problem. I depress the brake and shift into drive. let off the brake and nothing happens. I can shift into Drive, Reverse, Neutral, whatever but nothing happens. And my transmission line has broken before but that's good and it has fluid.

And stranger when I shift it back into Park it makes this weird loud ticking noise. Anytime I shift it out of park and back into park it makes that ticking or tapping. If anyone has any hints lease let me know. if it's a transmission issue that anyone knwos of I'll bring it to my trans guy. If it's something else or electronic I'll have it towed to my cousins shop.

Are you SURE the guy who towed it (I assume it was flat bedded) didn't pull the drive shaft or pull the shift linkage loose to get it up on the truck? I know there is a lot of electronic control to the current transmissions but i can't imagine there being NO response to the shift lever movement except the grinding when going into park. That sounds like the driveshaft is disconnected and the trans. IS turning but not turning the DS, thereby grinding on the "Park" pawl like it does when you try to put it in park when you're not fully stopped.

Do you have a manual transfer case? I think tow truck drivers put the transfer case in neutral when they are able to, and maybe it is still in neutral.
