Rear end clunk (different than an other issue I have found on here)

Hey guys I have a issue with my truck, it does not appear to be the same as anybody else's typical rear end clunk, I have upload a video of it, any help would be appreciated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9xB-dYQlOs

I have torn down the rear end, the carrier bearings, axle bearings and pinion bearings were all tight, the wheel bearings were the loosest but they only moved about the wideth of a business card or maybe a credit card. I did not notice any shavings in the fluid.

well I give up, I have looked over everything, I put the oil back in and I will drive it until $**t starts falling off. I figure I will know what to replace then.

That sounds like a typical "C-clip" groove wear problem. That is not so abnormal. I've seen it many times but it doesn't normally cause that kind of a sound unless you're doing just what you were doing. There is SOME slop between the "C" clip, the groove the C clip sits in on the inner end of the axle and the cross pin that holds the axles apart where they belong. It shouldn't cause any problem unless there gets to be EXCESSIVE wear in all of those components. Even then, it would be unusual to experience failure unless it causes a c-clip to break or something like that. I have heard it many times under those conditions, but no other time.

code58: Ya I had the C clip out and looked it over, it did not have any VISIBLE wear but I agree with you that the noise is the end of the axle shaft hitting the center pin. The only reason I am able to duplicate the problem is b/c the roads is East Tennessee are terrible, the roads usually are not level side to side and you get a lot of lateral pressure
