what to look for in a knock noise. suspension related

when sitting still, and starting to accelerate anything more than slowly, about 4 or 5 feet down the road, i get a little knock. its just one. it sounds like my ac compressor locking or unlocking, but it does it with the ac off. ive moved stuff around in my map pockets and center console to make sure its nothing shifting around. sounds like its coming from the front. would you start to suspect a cv axle or IWE? how can you test for play in them.

it doesent seem to do it if i accelerate or launch slowly. and only does it from a complete stop such as a stop sign or stop light.

any ideas where to start? can a balljoint or anything make a noise like that.

I saw a thread on here once and the guy was getting a same sort of knock sound in his front suspension. He later found out that one of his bolts had been torqued 100 lbs. less then spec. After he tightened to spec the noise stopped. Could be that. BTW i sometimes have that same noise after i put my 2.5" level on.

One thing you can check...bounce the front of the truck from the outside and see if the 'knock' is still there. If yes..then check the stabilizer arm links, they are known to go bad and make a sound like your hearing. Had to replace both of mine at 30,000 mi. The roads in the NE are terror on these parts.

good info. thats funny, because the last time my front wheels were put on, the guy used a low power impact gun to get them on, then a torque wrench to put them to their final torque, which i believe he said was 150lbs. and i watched and they did snug up, it wasnt like the impact put them on at >150lbs and then he just clicked the torque wrench. i might start with that. i will also jump up and down on the front end of the truck and listen too.

My 07 has the same issue. One clunk and then its done. I have replaced the upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, stabilizer end links, shocks and struts, new rotors, pads and IWE's. Clunk is still there. What havent I replaced? I'm wondering if the clunk is coming from the steering shaft?

im thinking that might be a close guess sirius. last night i was going around a turn and gave it a decent amount of throttle, almost goosing it, and i got the slip bump feel again like it does sometimes when it downshifts. as far as thats concerned it feels like the lag in the drive by wire system. only other time i have this happen is when i get stuck in something, and switch to 4wd. i switch it, neutral then drive, then start accelerating, i can feel the back wheels spin, then i get the bump feel and the front locks in and starts pulling

so it feels like something might be sloppy in my front end.

later today i think im going to pull everything out of my door pockets, center console, anything that could make a noise, and go try to replicate the click sound im getting.

also does anyone know the correct torque spec for the lug nuts? if i get it in the air can i replicate this clunk you think?

lugs torque specs are 150 ft lbs.
If you want to check your u joint drive it forward then put it in reverse and go backwards quickly. do it a few times and the noise will be more severe and unmistakable. This was the case when my front u joint went out. However my clunk is still there.

when the truck is off, and in park, and i crawl underneath, i can grab the front driveshaft and rotate it a little bit back and forth. the cv axles move with it, and its probably not more than a 1/4 inch of play.. is that normal

Body Mounts

Check the bolts on your body to frame mounts (the technical term escapes me).
They can cause the noise you are hearing too.

Still doing it. Does it when shifting to reverse from drive when still coasting forward some but doesn't sound like u joints. More like a tie rod or something
