How many people have used the Dorman FPDM???

Are you getting good results?

I cleaned, greased, and installed stand-offs on my OE FPDM a year or so ago... but now that I see the Dorman is only $60 and it is better coated... I think I'm going to order one and install it.

Seems to be 60 bucks well spent if it keeps me from getting stranded somewhere...

The corrosion that ate out the backs was from direct contact between steel and aluminum in a exposed place. The stand offs erase that contact that lead to the corrosion from dissimular metals. If you further greased it, or like I did, painted it, you have both eliminated the contact and exposure.

Just the stand offs would have stopped it.

I might get a spare at the junk yard to carry in a box? No, not gonna buy a new one just to put on it .... wondering if it will last as well as OEM internally.

yes, but now that the galvanic corrosion has "eaten" through whatever coating is on the aluminum it will continue to corrode.

Aluminum does not need to be in contact with another metal to corrode... it just accelerates the corrosion.

I did install standoffs and grease it... but that grease is probably worn off by now.

Maybe I'm being extra careful, but $60 is a cheap insurance policy in my mind... how much does it cost to be towed 10 miles home?

Only time will tell and getting one that's powder coated might just save you a tow one day....

As for the FPDM, too bad you caught it too late, but as mentioned earlier, once your stuck, you're stuck. I live up in the mild West Coast and had my spare FPDM for several years now. I may up selling it in the Classifieds in another year or two!

Glad you got it fixed!

They do have flat-decks but they said they didn't have to send one. I would have preferred it because my truck was FILTHY from being towed by a dually on mucky streets. Right after I cleaned it too!

What's funny is this is the second time I needed to call CAA. Last time was a couple years ago I had to go on a feild visit for work. Took the company F-150 with 1/2 a tank of gas, drove to the site 2 hrs away and forgot to fill up. I was over 3/4 the way back when I noticed the fuel light was on and didn't quite make it to the gas station. A flat bed came out and gave me a gallon of gas to get to the station about a mile away!

I replaced mine today with a new updated Ford Unit. after I sanded, primed, & painted the frame crossmember. I also used some dielectric grease in the harness! The old one did have some corosion on the back but not too bad. I am headed down to SC later in the winter with the bike loaded trailer in tow & don't want to chance it! I feel much better now!.......

Decided to do mine today... the part I was handed had studs already on it, that didn't line up with the existing bolt holes in the frame. And the parts computer was down, they couldn't get me the bolts. Hello cut off tool, rust-o-leum and battery terminal stand offs. Problem averted.

Yep, it was still working... another 1/8" of deflection or so and it would have cracked the PCB, from what I could see.
