steering noise after ball joint change

I just changed my ball joints last weekend and ever since I've been getting a strange noise from the power steering. I noticed it as soon as I started up the truck after finishing the ball joints.

The noise sounds like a growling/vibration type noise. It only happens while the engine is at an idle. If I give it a little gas the noise stops. It also changes volume if I turn the wheel. Also the noise is more prominent if the truck is in gear instead of just in park.

One last symptom is that the steering doesn't seem to hit the steering stops the same as it did before. It seems to bind and gets harder to turn the wheel right before it reaches the bump stops.

The neighbor that did most of work when we changed the ball joints said the noise is because we turned the steering without the truck running and it should go away quickly.

Anyone have any ideas?

Somebody did a writeup on this and suggested the angle of the upper control arm be measured before disassembly.

It wouldn't be the upper control arm. The noise is happening when the truck is not moving. Seems to be steering pump or rack & pinion related. I looked at it briefly last night and didn't see anything in a bind.
