'Door Check' Replacement
'Door Check' Replacement
Ok, sorry to start a new thread but I thought a better title may get some more views. I don't mean to be annoying... The Drivers Side 'Door Check' is busted on my 2006 Lariat. I would like to replace it myself. It disconnects easily from the door with 2 screws, but I can't seem to figure out how to access it where it comes off from the body... Removing the part from the body of the truck is where I need some help. I need to get to it from under the dash some how but the emergency brake assembly is in the way, and I can't see how to remove the 'door check' assembly. There are two screw I can remove from the outside but it needs to slide off the body from the inside. I read something about removing the cowl side panel??? What is that? - would this be correct?
Why do they make such a simple part and connection so difficult to access????
Any input will be really appreciated.
THANKS!

Old thread, but just did this in the garage in about 10 minutes so I thought I'd post.
Easy process; don't have to remove the kick panel, the parking brake assembly, or really much of anything other than the broken door check.
Start out on a level surface with no wind; don't want the door to be damaged while doing this.
I used a 10mm socket and removed the one of the body side nuts entirely, and then the other most of the way but still on. Then using a T30 Torx bit, remove the two door side bolts.
Next, get down in the footwell with a good light and look up above the parking brake assembly. You will see some flat rubber panels covering the access hole for the door check. Pull the larger one back, and then pull the foam out of the hole.
Now you can easily reach the door check; hold it with one hand while unscrewing it from the outside with the other. Jockey it through the hole, and it's out. Feed in the new one, and as they say, installation is the reverse of the removal.
