Unhappy Fluttering in drivetrain?

This may belong elsewhere, powertrain maybe, but not sure as I don't know the problem.

For some time now I've felt what I can only describe as a "flutter" when I first press the accelerator and begin to roll. It lasts only a few seconds and I seem to feel it -- I don't hear it. Originally it seemed only when I turned left but I've now felt it turning right and going straight - though honestly it seems predominantly when turning left.

It's almost as if something in the hubs or drive train is spinning for a second or two before it engages - but there's no noise of any kind. I've had the IWE problem some time ago and hubs were repaired as well as the solenoid, so it's not that.

Doesn't feel like a transmission slip. I've been running a Edge for a couple years now on the performance level. My tire guy/mechanic suggested perhaps it was a shifting point problem? I've dialed the Edge back to the towing level (for cheaper gas mostly) and still feel it so if it is the Edge its happening at multiple programmed levels.

Wish i could describe it better. It's feels like if you take a deck of cards and fan thru them quickly they sort of flutter. That's the feeling that seems to come thru the accelerator.

Any ideas or thoughts appreciated. (It's a 2006 5.4.)

I'm not mechanically inclined so you'd have to tell me more. I will say it doesn't happen all the time but frequently and only when starting from standing still.

What is the axle code on the door jamb sticker, and how many miles are on the truck?

Check engine light on?

When was the last time you put in new spark plugs?

Engine light not on - never has. Plugs were changed last year at about 88,000 miles. Just over 106,000 now. It runs like a top - just this odd momentary occasional flutter when you initially engage the accelerator from a dead stop. It's not the engine stuttering - that's why I say it seems to be in the rolling drive train - at least that's what it feels like.

It's most often evident when turning left though I've felt it turning right and very, very rarely when moving straight forward.

PLEASE get us the axle code - if it's a limited slip diff it's due for a fluid and friction modifier change. If you aren't mechanically inclined, take it to the dealer and ask them to change the rear diff fluid. Should cost you about $150. You have classic symptoms of LSD clutch chatter - *IF* you have a LSD. The axle code WILL tell us whether it is or not.

Sorry - I did that the other day and forgot to post. If I'm looking at the right number on the door panel sticker, under the word Axle it says B6. Would that be correct??

That is a 3.73 limited slip. I'd recommend a fluid change. Use 75W140 full synthetic fluid and a bottle of friction modifier from the dealer. Mine started chattering at about 90k and the fluid change fixed it.

Ditto. Just to add, if you use Mobil1 gear oil, it already has the limited-slip additive in it.

I would still put a bottle of FORD additive in it.

Thanks guys for the great info. I'll get on to that fluid change this weekend. It's this kind of thread that exemplifies the real value of this forum!
Beers all around!
