It's finally done and over with...
Well my dad came into town this week and I figured now was as good as ever to tackle the dreaded spark plug change. I had some pretty high hopes going into this project after doing a lot of reading of what works best and so on and so forth. I ran 2 bottles of Chevron Techron through before the change and soaked the plugs before hand and took our time. I just turned 53k on my 04' so I was hoping for positive results.
Needless to say, after about 5 hours of labor we broke 7 out of the 8 plugs. Three of the plugs cracked the porcelain and the other four the tips pulled off. Thankfully the Lisle tool worked great at pulling the rest of the plug out. My advice to anyone tackling the project is to just go at it and get it done; because even by taking all the right pre-change steps I still broke 7 out of 8 :confused: In the end I'm just glad this is all done and over with! :rocker: |
I hear ya, bro. I just went through the same thing and broke 5 out of 8. I swear between the plugs, fuel filter and new o2 sensors, it is running like new again.

Is it harder to change plugs on the newer f-150s as opposed to a 1997? Why are the spark plugs breaking?

The lisle tool is a time and money saver for sure. I didn't use an impact wrench, we actually turned it out and back several times while using penetrating oil when it got tough to turn out. This seemed to work better than just a pre-soak; even though we did break 7 out of the 8, because it would usually just leave the tip behind rather than break the porcelain and create more work in the long run. I did change my oil first thing after the plug change. Kind of sucks because I only had about 1k on the last oil change but it's better to be safe than sorry :thumbsup: I'm working on re-stone guarding and painting my rocker panels because Ford screwed that up in the assembly line on the early Blazing Yellow/DSG two-tone FX4 04's. So far it's turning out real good :rocker: |
