How often to change oil?

Gonna change the oil in our '04 F-150 4.6L this weekend, just wondering how often to change the oil and which oil to use. The options we considerd are:

Mobil 1 Extended Performance that gurantees oil life for 10-15K
Royal Purple which says 12K
There are also people on here who say they ran Castrol Syn. and they go 20-25K. Is that really possible? Thanks all!:)

Oil change and tire rotation every 5K for me.

8 quarts Motorcraft 5W-20 with an Motorcraft FLA1 filter.

Just follow what your manual says. Today's oils can certainly handle many more miles before they breakdown. But unless your changing the filter once or twice thru that extended change interval. You'll be circulating oil that's still good but full of particulates.

But like anything, this is just opinion and it's always best to do some good research to find out the info that you need.

You can't go wrong running the OE oil/filter. Motorcraft oil and filters are readily available at wally world.

I previously used Mobil 1 and ran anywhere from 5-7k with motocraft filter. I just switched over to Amsoil OE 5w20 with Pure One filter and will run it the same.

I run Penzoil platinum with a K&N filter and change mine out about every 5,000 miles. Depending on what oil you go with determines the change interval. Non-synthetic should be every 3,000 and full synthetic is good for 5,000+ depending on driving habits and your climate

7 quarts i hope you mean. our trucks dont take 8 quarts. and it shouldnt take an fl1a filter either, they go on older 5.0's and 4.0s

to keep cam phaser problems at bay arent you supposed to stick with motocraft oil and filter? you guys switching it up had any problems?

that being said i do motocraft 5-20 and a fl820s every 5k.

ill probably do it after 2.5k or so this time, and then again in another 2.5k just to clean things out.

damn. whered it relocate it to? thats awesome! i want one of those for my truck and my mustang.

im surprised we dont see those more often, one of my old friends has a 4.7 tundra he has to pull the factory skid plate off when he changes his oil.

You can run your M1 or RP and end up with the same results and a lighter wallet. General concensous is to run the Motorcraft 5w-20 and the motorcraft fl820s filter. They both perform flawless on the 4.6 engine. You will get a ton of opinions on when to change them so you will just have to decide for yourself. I change at around the 4000 mark.

I have had great success with Motorcraft 5-20 and Motorcraft filter changed about every 4000 to 4500. Has 118,000 and the level on the dipstick braely moves between changes.

i dont get why people are running synthetic oil at 5k intervals, its more expensive than the motocraft oil, and wont net you an mpg gains. motocraft oil is designed to be run for 5k, so what justifies the price difference?

Synthetic is just better for the engine in general and I've never had issues with synthetic. I'll stick with that.

Amsoil 0w-20 with their filter.....
I change oil only once a year but the truck only averages 6k-8k miles a year....

JMHO.....
