Who knew? I sure didn't.
my '01 only had headlights, no fog lights, so i installed a pair behind the grill and i would only have 4 lit at a time. i wired it so that they would cut off when i used the highbeams which was legal, but having them on the same line as the headlights was where the problem was. i was informed then that as long as they were lower than the headlights it would pass inspection. how could i argue with the guy?
Oh I agree, HATE those cars/trucks driving around with those blinding lights. And when they pull up behind you. Even though I was running the KC lights all the time, I do go out of my way to always check and make sure they are pointed downward for that very reason. Driver's have never flashed their lights at me for my light being bright, and the cops(including the one that pulled me over) never bothered me over the past 3 years for the lights.
Oh well, my bad for not knowing the law so can't complain. Officer was cool and let me go with warning, and I've already disconnected the lights. Just deciding what I want to do now.

You can have more than two fog lights, you can have 8, but no more than two can be lit at a time on a public roadway.
Also, reading your post above, were those lights center above the center of the headlights themselves? Only can have two spot lights above the headlights except there is an exemption for those temp lights that are used with snow plows.
On your '01 F-150 you only have two headlights right? One on the rigfht, one on the left? You can run the two fog lights with either the high or low beams. But in fog, high beams hurt your vision.
It's there in 46.2-1030. I even bolded it. If you have a problem at an inspection station, ask the mechanic to show you in the book or ask him for the number to call his supervising trooper and ask him/her about it.
I think you likely misunderstood the reason he gave you.
he stated that there could be NO after market lights on the same level as the headlights. looking at the truck, there were 4 straight across the front. i even had them wired to cut off with the high beams, state law. i asked him what difference would it make if they were there or mounted on the bottom of the bumper? like i said, i think he was just being a pr!ck.

There is no difference in the inspection manual between aftermarket and factory fog or driving lamps. Both aftermarket and factory lamps have to meet the same standards, and your mechanic has passed a few new Mustangs with fog or driving lights in the grille at same height as headlights.
Go here http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Safety.shtm.
(ps: not the whole manual there, just the procedure)

yes they have, but those are factory, like i said, these were aftermarket and not a factory setup, maybe HE didn't understand what HE was reading. he's probably not the sharpest knife in the drawer anyway. but hey, a 1 shot deal. i guess that's why he's out of business now. i dunno!!! don't know if this matters or not but this was about 9 years ago
