bed toolbox or bed cover
bed toolbox or bed cover
ive been leaning towards getting a toolbox, probably a low profile UWS in black. but recently ive been thinking that thats going to kill my bed space. im looking for people who have those trifecta covers, the ones that are in the 400 dollar range, i need reviews on if they are water tight for the most part.
all im looking for is something to keep stuff out of the weather, bags, guns, whatever. if me and 3 or 4 other people go somewhere to go shooting or on vacation i have no where now to keep stuff dry.
a toolbox is about right for me, but a bed cover would give me even more covered room, and maybe help with mpg?
in order to get something pretty decently water tight do i need to get one of those hard shell a.r.e ones ?
any ideas? i dont use my bed much but it would be nice to be able to take the cover off and have a pretty useful bed.
whats the most weater resistant cover i can get for about a max of 500-600 bucks?
any ideas are appreciated, let me know your thoughts, bed cover vs, toolbox.

My Truxedo Lo Pro QT is pretty water tight if I remember to keep the rubber flap at the back on top of my tailgate instead of inside. Even with it folded in it's still pretty good at keeping water out since there's not much room to begin with to get in. You just have to remember to always push the Velcro down and pull it tight on both side if you want it to always look nice and smooth and stay clean inside.
It was around 3-400 bucks and I think it is well worth it. It's nice because if I want I can either remove the rolled up tarp in about 10 seconds by just sliding back the clamps. If I want to take the whole thing out to get the 100% width of the bed back up by the rails then it's only 3 bolts, takes about a minute to loosen those and remove it.
It is nice being able to leave whatever I want in the bed and thieves are much less interested in my truck. I haven't even had a problem with somebody messing with it. The only downside to a soft cover over a hard cover is the fact that if they really wanted they could easily just slash the cover to get into the bed.
I will say that if you decide to go with a cover over a toolbox to find same way of keeping things back by the tailgate. I have a 2x12 that is cut and slides into the slots in the side of the bed. If I don't feel like leaving that in there I also made a kind of net out of 4 bungee cords that keeps things pretty well at the back. It's a real pain having to either lay down and crawl to the front of the bed or open up the entire cover just to go get one little thing that slid forward.
If I had an 8ft bed I would definitely get the toolbox. I use the bed too much to be able to lose 18-24" of space like that.

good advice. i have the worthless 5.5 foot bed, and i have the cargo extender thing too. so you arent afraid to put luggage with clothes in it and have them stay dry on a trip in the rain. if you yourself had to go somewhere a couple hours away with 4 other people and luggage and it was going to rain would you worry about bags getting wet?

Like I said I jsut have to make sure I flip up the rubber flap that seals between the tailgate and cover if I want to be absolutely sure it stays dry back there.
I've had a regular snap on tonneau cover on my trucks for the last 7 years and I've never had a drop of water end up in my bed.
The rails that you clamp to the bed that have the snaps on them have a rubber seal that makes them water tight.
I bought mine for $250. It's a Tonneaumaster.

Water gets in there, it just isn't alot, not enough to pool or anything...
Like I said...never a drop.

I have a bed cover, I believe it is an Extang. It came on my "04" and is the 1st cover I have owned. It is a soft style that hinges at the front of the bed and raises with the little hydrolic pistons. When I traded for my "06" I transfered the cover right at the dealers lot (they weren't getting it). If I can help it I will Never be without a bed cover of some style on a truck.
Within seconds I can pop off the 2 pistons from the frame, lift the entire cover and remove it from the truck. It goes back on just as easy. It keeps everything in my truck bed nice and dry, No More cleaning snow out of it. Yet the style of cover is still a little flexible in case I need to haul an extension ladder or lumber etc.
Get a bed cover, you won't be dissapointed !

An Extang Trifecta came on my 2005 Screw. At first I was hesitant to trust it's water tightness, but it performs much better than expected. I routinely keep clothes and gear back there, and have never had any issues in rain/snow/ice. I also once spent about 10 minutes spraying all the seams, seeing if water would get in, and found that almost none got through.
im going to truckin thunder today to look at both again. only thing i can come up with that throws me off with a bed cover is where im going to mount my cb antenna. i like the low profile qt cover though since it rolls up all the way.

anyone see any better mpg with a cover or is this urban myth

As far as MPG, I don't know, I try not to keep track of it too often. It softens the blows a little when I drop $100 into the tank every weekend.
im completley torn now. the guy at truckin thunder really likes the qt. he said snow doesent hurt it, they are pretty indestructable, and quite water tight.
i really cant decide. i was in truckin thunder with 400 dollars in my pocket (was gonna put the rest on a card) and walked out.
qt is good cause its more covered area and i can roll it up and have my whole bed, but it makes my cb options limited.
toolbox is even more water tight, would probably last longer, and provides more seating (lol) but takes up some of my already short bed.

Another good side to the QT is that if you ever have ANY problems with it all you have to do is contact your dealer or TruXedo.
I had a problem with the adhesive on the original factory seals. They sent me a full set of all seals for it free of charge. They even paid for shipping and sent them straight to my door.
They even cover rips or tears in the tarp. If it ever manages to fail or get cut they will replace it free of charge. This is why I choose them over similar brands. Lifetime warranty that actually covers important parts matters to me.
I have a black tonneau cover that came with my truck (has a 5.5' bed) when I bought it back in Oct of 2007. I took it off the day I bought it and it's just been sitting in the garage. Has all the rails and hardware that came with it. I don't use it (I installed a low profile black UWS toolbox) and have never tried selling it but I saw this thread and decided to chime in. If you're interested, let me know.
