Carrier bearing going bad?

2004 150 4.6 8 ft bed. Whiring sound started a couple weeks ago, jacked it up and tracked it to the carrier bearing in the middle of the drive shaft-wondering if its a pain to change, never messed with one before. Tried searching but couldn't find much on the subject
Thanks

If I remember correctly you can get it as a whole assembly and it bolts directly to the cross member. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Not long ago someone had one go bad, seems they were maybe going to have to get whole new shaft? https://www.f150online.com/forums/20...through-2.html

My old '77 it's easy to change and my '07 is a Scab with a one piece rear shaft with replaceable U-joints. I think it was '04 and some '05s that had the "other" not so easily serviced U=-joints though there are kits out with cutters that remove the staking and adds clips.

Here's a link from that other tread on a whole new shaft with standard U-joints and bearings for future serviice. http://www.driveshaftspecialist.com/Truckhtml/Ford.html

U-Joints with grease fittings ..... HAVE to be greased regularly.

According to ford its not serviceable-new drive shaft. Parts guy recommended a drive shaft repair facility that could press a new one in

Find a driveshaft shop and talk to them.

Did you look here at that link posted? Cheaper and Serviceable?

http://www.driveshaftspecialist.com/Truckhtml/Ford.html

They do it mail order, even can have it made with 1 ton size U-Joints?

I did check it out, thanks-it will probably be a solution if no shop around here can do anything with it, to be honest I might leave it awhile and see what happens

Sure thing, but it ain't gonna get better.

Might be worth looking at salvage yards for a good shaft / bearing out of a later 07 or newer one?

Good Luck!

I know a boneyard near me that has an 05 that I could get, but I think I might be better off with the aftermarket kit

talked to a shop claims he can replace it, not sure how if you ask me. If not a new shaft for 400, which seems very reasonable
