flex fuel / e85

Don't flame me for ignorance , but on the F150's, the only ones that are flex fuel are the ones that actually have the flex fuel badge, correct? I factory ordered my (canadian) 2007 fx4, and the salesman told me it would be one of the first flex-fuel certified trucks. he said part of the reason it was taking a while was because they were converting the plant to make ALL the 5.4l F150s after that flex fuel. (sounds like a good story doesn't it?).

Well it showed up and didn't have a flex fuel badge on it...and by that time the salesman was no longer working at the dealership and nobody seemed to have an answer for me. Ordered it in oct/nov 2006 and got it in january sometime.

thanks
Matt

Hey Matt!

No worries - I'm one of the few folks on here who do not flame N00bs

Having said that,

RTFM - right from yer 2007 F150 Owner's Manual - Page 334:

"FFV fuel tanks may contain zero to 85 percent ethanol. Any fuel
blends containing gasoline and ethanol should be treated the same as
“Fuel Ethanol ”. To identify if your vehicle is an FFV, it may be
equipped with a yellow fuel cap with the writing “E85/Gasoline”, or
check if there is a label on the fuel filler door, or check your VIN.
When checking the VIN look for the engine type identifier (8th
character). If your vehicle is an FFV, then the character will be
labeled as a “V”."

I have an 07 F150 with the 5.4l flex fuel engine, but it also has no special badge on the tailgate or special fuel cap. But the window sticker and the VIN say its a flex fuel and I've run it thru the engine and it works fine.

I too have an 07 FX4 with a FFV engine. The 07's and probably the 08's did not have any external badging to identify the flex fuel capability. Not all E-85 trucks got the yellow fuel cap, mine has a black one that says ford reccommends BP fuel in green writing on it, it does have a sticker inside the fuel door to signify the E-85. Another dead giveaway is the engine identifier in the vin, regular 5.4's had a 5 in the eighth position, while FFV 5.4's had a V

Excellent info above. Mine is an '08 and I've got no external badging but I do have the yellow cap.

My 06 has the sticker in the fuel door and the vin says it is a flex fuel vehicle. And it has the black fuel cap with the BP label. My truck has been drinking E 85 almost every tank for the last year or more.

So the Canadian version
- on page 337 it says to 'check the cap' to see if its e85 compatible, but doesn't say anything more than that. ie it doesnt say it will be written, or a yellow cap, or anything
- it also says if the 8th character is V then its a FFV

On my 2007 there is no sticker, the gas cap just says "run ethanol or unleaded only'. But the 8th character in the VIN is V... so I guess that should be the be all end all. Maybe there was something to what the salesman said about my truck being one of the first at that plant to get the FFV modifications and they just didn't have their act together yet with the owners manual, stickers and such.

Not that we can get e85 where I live anyways, its mostly e10 and some premiums have zero ethanol, but I was in Brainerd MN for the NHRA nationals a couple weeks ago and noticed a lot of stations had it.

Next time I can try it!

thanks guys. Especially to MGD

Matt

Sorry to steal the thread for a minute, but does anyone know if the flex fuel badge on the tail gate on the 09-10's has an alignment hole? I would like to remove mine if it does not have a hole.

I'm looking at trading my 06 5.4 Gas F150 for a 07 5.4 E85 F150...

have some questions... Yes I have done some searching trying to find what I'm lloking for but haven't found a clear one.

1: If I wanted to or if I couldn't find E85 on a trip could I run 87 - 93 gas?

2: Would I be able to use the edge that I have in my truck now?

1. Of course. All the flex fuel package does is make it so you CAN run E85. It's still a conventional gasoline engine. I'd bet that you will wind up running gasoline most of the time anyway - the gas mileage on E85 will make you choke.

2. I don't know, maybe someone else here can tell you, but I bet Edge could tell you if you call them.

it just means you can run e85. i cant even buy it where i live.

this is an important thing to know when doing a fuel filter, since the flex fuel trucks have 3/8s inch fuel line, where non have 5/16s fuel line.

Thanks guys.

Is it true E85 egines are built stronger because the E85 is more harmful to rubber hose and such. i read that E85 cars/trucks use Stainless gas tanks and fuel line as well...

Have a couple places near me that sell the E85, but price/mileage wise I'm doing better with regular fuel.

Thanks... That's been what I've been finding out. Plus why i wanted to know if could run regular gas still.

Thinking of doing this because it's a nice Super Crew.

Would like to have a little more back seat room then I do in my Super Cab.
Plus this already has the BDS lift I was thinking of installing on my truck on it. And the heated seats I was going to be adding to mine.

So it seems like if I can trade mine buy this and keep my payments and interest about where they are now. it makes sence to do it.
Plus this truck has about 23,000 less miles then mine.

Only kicker is I like the ease of maintaining my silver paint.
This truck is black on black which looks wonderful and is timeless.
Just more work to keep looking good.
