cam phasers/ warranty and ford...

i have an 04 screw 4x-5.4..85k mi..it has a pretty loud clicking noise at idle..like a deisel. anyway, i understand this is a typical problem and needs cam phaser replacement..so..i call my local ford dealer (where i bought the truck) i ask if cam phaser replacement is covered by my extended warranty-100k. they say, "not sure", REALLY!..i ask if they could please find out..they want me to bring in my truck next week..said they need it all day just to see if the problem is covered..i am skeptical of all of this..thoughts?

The dealer will usually not tell you that over the phone. They will want to see it before they tell you anything so that they don't promise you anything. Just make sure when you take it in you tell them you don't want any work done that will not be covered or atleast call you first.

mine needed replacment...but i think i was much worse off. my cam phaser they say, was actually breaking apart and caused internal damage to the engine block. needless to say...i got a engine replacment. my 100k warranty, through Premiere, covered it at 81k miles on the ticker

I took mine in last year cuz it was getting bad and the stupid dealer told me its normal and they wont replace it. I was sooooo pissed, and argued for 30 mins with this guy. I have a warranty and they wouldnt do anything for me. Im going to take it in again this summer, since I live in a different city now and hopefully this dealer will help me out.

Just because the cam phaser makes noise does not mean it's functioning improperly. Cam phasers make noise. Learn to live with it.

Consistent ticking at idle = fuel injector noise. Knocking at warm idle = cam phaser noise.

mine ticks at idle and then when I raise the rpm's up to around 1000rpm's there is a nasty knocking sound, and this is when its warm. It barely ticks when I first start it up

This is my exact issue. It makes some terrible noises at start up many times as well. At low speed in my neighborhood it makes a slapping noise also.

Taking it in tomorrow afternoon to the other dealer in my area. Took it to the dealer I bought it from also about 5 times without any help. I took it to this other dealer with the same results, but when I picked up the truck I talked with another service advisor and hes going to help me out...

The noise at startup is the timing chain tensioner bleed off. The oil pressure drains off and once it's built back up the noise stops.

Look at the FRT link, episode 22, in my sig.

And heres playing with the throttle raising the rpm's up to 1000-1200 and backing back down to idle. http://s136.photobucket.com/albums/q...t=SANY1021.flv

Thats what I've been told too. And now with 212,000 miles, and after all of that noise, my engine light is on and I have a problem. At low rpm runs like crap. Check it out and its either the phasers or the actuators. No way to tell. Don't want to pay for labor twice so I'm replacing both. Phasers must be in such bad shape that they are now throwing the timing off. I realize most don't have that many miles on their 04s so I guess I'm "first to get there"...

update...
so i brought it in..dealer says 'yep-cam phasers and they need replacing" they said they needed to keep my truck for a few days, until the 'warranty inspector' could come and look..he came the next morning, but they still haven't told me if it is covered..then i get a call, to provide my service records..so i bring those down, i also tell them i change my own once a year with royal purple, so that is why there is a gap every spring..anyway..still have not heard..i am thinking why did i spend the dollars on a warranty that covers drive train to 100k and then have them refuse to honer it..i am pretty sure engine internals are part of the 'drive train'
