Engine problem or bad gas?
Engine problem or bad gas?
I am not sure right now, so I am going to ask.
So far no CEl, no lights at all.
06 5.4L 3V
Gryphon, 93 perf.
AEM dry flow filter, AEM brute force intake.
So, late Tuesday night I filed up with 93 at a station I never filled up at before, truck ran fine the short trip to the house (less than 3 miles).
Then the next day (Wednesday) I drove to work (25 miles) and had no problems.
That day, I took the AEM filter off and followed directions on the back of the two bottles of AEM filter cleaner to the letter.
I let the filter dry from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM. (6 hours)
At the same time I also installed a XM raido, I had a female cig plug I used, I plugged the XM plug into the female cig plug and then ran a wire to the fuse box and ran a ground behind my DVD player.
I am pretty sure I used a acc/ign 10A and none of the ECU/PCM fuses.
Right before I left from work I let the truck run at idle for about 15 mins to make sure the filter was not going to be a problem, ran fine.
It felt dry when I put it back on, and I made sure to check the clamp before I left work, it was tight and I did not see/hear or feel any leaks around it.
On the way home from work, I pulled on to the highway and sped up to highway speeds. I have been driving 55-60MPH and keeping the truck below 2,500 Rpm. I am trying to see what kind of MPG I can get at 55-60 as opposed to 65-70.
So far I have went 200 miles and I am at 1/2 tank. (I have a small tank, even with the low fuel light on, its only 18 gallons to full)
However I needed to get up to speed, so I got up to 3,000 RPM. Thats where the problem started.
Once I got to 3,000-,3,100 RPM, it felt like the truck sucked something in, and then blew it out. (I know it would have got hung in the cats, it just felt and sounded that way) So I backed off and the truck jumped to 3,300 RPM then went back to running fine.
It seemed to be running fine and no lights, so I drove very carefully back to my dads garage, kept it under 2,000 RPM and at 55 all the way home.
When I got there, I shut the truck off, and unplugged the gryphon after checking for anything on it, dad hooked his scan tool to the truck, but it was unable to pull any codes.
So I started it back, started fine. drove home, ran fine.
Ran fine the next day.
Today, I was on my way back from lunch, and the truck was on cruse at 55.
All the way to where I went to lunch it ran fine.
On the way back it started shaking pretty bad going up a hill. So I sped up a little and it went away, the truck was (or sounded like it was) sputtering at 55 but not at 60?
After I sped up and slowed back down it was fine again.
Ran fine all the way back to work, got stopped at a light. The truck ran and accelerated fine from the light all the way to 3,500 RPM where I back off.
The truck is running and shifting fine, no codes/DTC from the gryphon or dads Verus.
no engine lights. Starts fine.
Some time when I come from highway speeds to a stop the truck idles kinda low.
Thoughts?
Fuel filter was clean (but factory) when I went to change it, Advance gave me the wrong one (I assume that a 5.4L non-flex and flex are not the same filter? I have the flex.)
Blew in one end, fule shot out 2-3 feet with no effort. that was at 35,000 miles. it now has 42,000 miles.

will any electrons cleaner work? BJ used a different kind, but I have a can of the stuff we use for the PC"s and when i take a phone apart to clean it.
it says eletronic safe, I use it one PC's and cell phones all the time.

As long as it's non-residue it's safe - but why not just swing by a parts store and pick up a can of MAF cleaner? As long as you use an oiled air filter, it's something you should be using frequently anyway.
its a dry flow, NON oiled air filer. But I will stop by advance tomorrow.

Agree that some MAF cleaner should fix this. Those filters are notorious for sucking oil up on the MAF no matter how long you let it dry.
I finally got rid my K&N Pod type wet filter because of this.

He just stated above that it was a dry filter.
