you need to put both motors on the ground and compare the vacuum hoses and the injectors

in 2006 Ford used a different vacuum hose and routing compared to the 2004/2005 trucks.

they also used a slightly different injector due to the issues the 2005 trucks were having with faulty injectors.

each motor is essentially a complete swap. at most, I can see you having to take your 2004 intake off and putting it onto the 2006 motor. The CMCV crap and the vacuum stuff will be the determining factor.

Thanks for your help! What CMCV means? Regarding the computers, do you think a reflash or something is needed?

I can't say for certain, but I think Ford quit using EOT in 2006 or '07. No big deal, if your '06 engine doesn't have an engine oil temp sensor, just clean/reuse the oil pan from your 2004 engine.

this is talking about a 4.6 3v...but it's pretty much the exact same thing for the 5.4 3v. The CMCV is built into the 5.4 3v manifold whereas the 4.6 3v uses a seperate chunk of metal.
The 3-valve SOHC 4.6 L with variable camshaft timing (VCT) first appeared in the redesigned 2005 Ford Mustang.

The engines are equipped with an electronic Charge Motion Control Valve (CMCV) system that provides increased charge motion at low engine speeds for improved emissions and low-rpm torque.
basically the CMCV is a butterfly valve for each cylinder (like an old dragracer carb intake) that blocks air flow prior to it reaching the cylinder. they flutter at a high rpm and are supposed to help something...but alot of guys remove them and gain 5-10 HP. the CMCV system had small changes throughout the years, so you need to ensure you keep your 2004 version with the new motor.

basically you can grab any 2004-2008 F-150 5.4 3v motor, or 2005-2008 Expedition 5.4 3v motor or a 5.4 3v from a Superduy.

then take the intake off and swap your 2004 stuff on if it's different. you shouldn't need to do any PCM stuff at all. just make sure all of the stuff is the same when you re-install.

didn't know about that quintin. wonder why they did that

2008 to 2004 swap

I hope this thread isnt dead- same basic subject line. I put a 2008 expedition 5.4 with 46,500 into a 2004 5.4 truck and had trouble since. gets a P0340 code and wont run with the cam sensor plugged in- unpluuged in limp mode runs OK- traced all wiring and even reprogrammed the pcm to no avail. any clues?

Thanks

I wound up moving the electrical sensors, oil pan due to oil sensor not being in the newer engine- intake, which has to come off anyway and 04 has some different vacuum setups- I used the newer exhaust manifolds as they have heat sheilds on them. so basically long block. Everything lined up perfectly.
