So what do you have to change to make it run perfectly

I hope so as my built motor is an 09/10.

As long as you use the long block it should work. As said I previous post, swap all parts over from the 04 onto the 09 motor.

Apart from vac the only difference is the FRPS. the heads are different on the 09, cannot remember if the 3L3E & 8L3E coils have the same connector?

I know it's been a while but I am curious as to wether or not you were able to complete the 09 5.4 swap into a 04. I am in the same boat and am wondering if after intake, hoses and oil pan switch, from old to new , if everything else was a direct swap ?

5.4 swap

I'm needing to swap a 2007 5.4. I found a 2012 v-10 6.8 I believe do y'all know if it will fit or have any suggestions on motors I can use. The only thing I'm finding is 04-08 5.4 that will work any suggestions are greatly appericated

Just did a engine swap on my 2004 f150 new body style with the 5.4l,
Everything went fine until I tried to connect my fuel pressure sensor, it went from a big square with 3 wires to a small flat sensor with 4 wires, the connections don't fit and it makes my truck idle ruff.
It came out of a truck 1 year newer same body style same engine.

2004 to any year swap

Hi all. I found this thread while looking for something similar and created a new account just so I could reply! (I know it started in 2010, updated last year, but no one has given this info).

Regarding the 2004 F150 5.4 3v (non-heritage). I have this truck, FX4, and discovered this a couple years ago.

This is the only year of the new body style that has a different program in the PCM and different camshafts. The cam 'keys' are clocked I believe 90 or 45 degrees from the 2005+ 5.4 cams so they're not a direct swap. In addition the lash adjusters are also different with this year. A few posts up kind if indicates this about it not running right. The 2004 PCM shouldn't be able to run a 2005+ cam (or visa versa). I found an article explaining the difference as well as when you look at any Ford parts site, this one year is a different part number for both (and they're more expensive). Can't find the site, but I printed it and it's my garage.

I'm actually trying to find if the PCM from a 2005+ is a direct swap with my 2004 PCM so I can use more readily available aftermarket parts so I can install performance cams, supercharger, etc.

If someone wants the document I found regarding this I'll gladly share it. Hope this helps someone.

This last post spooked me

I also have an 04 5.4 3v. I found in 06 to replace it. I've read some folks saying they had success. Although I'm curious if they had in 05 or newer and swapped to the different years that are compatible. Seems the 05 to 08 are definitely the same at least the short block anyway. 04 seems like an odd duck. I looked up camshafts and the 04 is different than the 05 to 08. This part has me spooked. This is a long post thanks for reading it all. Also if the 04 cams are keyed differently I wonder if I could just swap the ECU along with the motor I have access to both. Thanks again for any help you might be able to give me. I'm hoping for a Ford Tech or someone who has done this exact swap before.
