Unhappy Oil Leak? Rear Main?

I have an oil leak and I think I've narrowed it down to the real main seal. I've been trying to trace this down for about 2 weeks and I've already replaced the oil pan gasket thinking that was it but no luck. It's leaking in between the oil pan and the bellhousing. I've checked my valve cover gaskets and everything else I could think of. And my warantee just ran out 2,000 miles ago, go figure.

Is this a common problem on the 5.4's?

Has anyone changed this out on there own?

Any advice or help will be greatly appriciated, thanks.

Will do. How long has your truck been doing this? Sucks when you buy the truck from new and never had a problem until now when I have to fix it on my own.

Not much help from me but for the last few of years I have a small amount motor oil around the rubber plug on the bell housing. I've looked around on the backside of the engine but cannot find any sign of oil. The dealer wouldn't look at since it was not physically dripping at the time. However it is increasingly becoming more and more wet.

Front seal on the tranny? Wouldn't that leak tranny fluid not motor oil?

ok, that makes more sense. Mine is definitaly motor oil, before I put the new oil pan gasket on it was dark old oil and then with the oil change now it's clearer new oil. It must be the rear main, I don't think there is anything else that could leak back there.

Here's a picture of what my oil leak looks like. Wondering if this looks the same on other trucks oil leaks from the rear main seal.

i have done a couple, it requires special tools to remove and install the new seal properly(dealer tools). it is a 2 peice seal and they are sold seperatly so make sure you get both the main seal and the slinger.

I have a 2007 fx2 5.4 with 38000 miles that is starting to leak a lot of oil towards the back of the oil pan. I'm glad there is a 60000 mile powertrain warrenty. Going to the dealership tomorrow.

took mine in under warranty for what I thought was a rear main leak, they replaced the rear main and cleaned it up and test drove it and it still leaked. They are working on it now but they think it is the front motor cover and it runs down something and drips exactly as it would if it were the rear main

Thanks, Keep me posted on what you find. I think mine is doing the same. I replaced the oil pan gasket because it was a cheap and easy attempt at eliminating one thing that could be leaking. Everything looked good and after cleaning it up I noticed that it's damp with oil along the edge of the oil pan. So I'm thinking the same thing.

Mine ended up being a seal in the oil filter mount. Not the gasket on the oile filter but a seal somewhere in the mount it screws into.
