Cancelling extended warranty question
Cancelling extended warranty question
I bought a 2008 F150 from a dealer (dealer is about 4 hours from me) and bought an extended warranty also. I changed my mind on the extended warranty and sent in a written request to cancel the enxtended warranty, a copy of my purchase contract and an odometer statement as per the terms and conditions regarding cancellation.
I bought the truck on Feb 6th and the dealer received my cancellation request on Feb 18th. I have not been able to get ahold of the finance guy that I was dealing with and being that there is a time limit of 30 days from purchase on being able to cancel the extended warranty I am wondering if there is anything I can do to be able to show that I tried to cancel within the allowed time, in case the dealer/finance guy drags his feet or sits on the paperwork until the 30 days is up and then says "Oh sorry you missed the cancellation window" or something like that.
Any ideas?

Who told you the time limit is 30 days? Or do you mean 30 days without incurring a penalty?
Ask to speak to your salesman, then the sales manager, and then call Ford Customer Service (the number is in your owner's manual).

The terms and conditions on the back of the purchase contract state:
(1) If the Selling Dealer receives a written cancellation request, including a copy of Your application, proof of payment and statement of odometer reading, on or before the 30th day from the Signature Date and no claims have been filed under this Agreement, the Selling Dealer will cancel this Agreement and refund the purchase price You paid for this Agreement, minus a $75 processing fee for each plan canceled.
I know I'll have to pay the $75 fee but I'm just wondering how I can make sure the dealer cancels the extended warranty... worse case scenario they tell me no problem we'll cancel it for you... then I find out later they didn't actually cancel it and they say they never got my request to cancel it, or they say they didn't get it within the 30 days.
Just trying to cover all my bases. I'm hoping they cancel it without any fuss or muss but I just want to have some kind of proof to be able to say I did in fact try to cancel within the allowed time.
Any ideas on how I could actually show that I tried to have it canceled? Right now it would seem to be my word against theirs if things go south. I have the USPS delivery confirmation receipt but that doesn't prove what was in the envelope I mailed them...

You should be fine with the USPS receipt.
If you can, scan the letter and e-mail it to them, requesting a delivery and read receipt. Then follow-up with a phone call and record the conversation, or at least get the names of everyone you talk to.
Keep calling (at least once a day) and note the date/time of each call.

I work at a dealership and most warranties have to be refunded through the company that provides the warranties. Most times these are provided by third party companies (think ins. policy for your car) and have little affiliation with the dealer. If you bought Ford's Esp plan it might be a different case though. So double check you're paperwork.
30 days is usually the cut off time for a "full" refund, it gets prorated after this time accounting for miles and age. You should be able to get a prorated refund any time before your warranty runs out.
Speak to the General Manager, bypass the sales person and the F&I guy and plead youre case to him/her.
