AMP RESEARCH-a slightly different view
AMP RESEARCH-a slightly different view
I know I don't post here very often ( I mostly use this sight for reference when in a jam), and I do not intend this to be an "Amp Research" bashing. I just want to give a different point of view on my ongoing attempt to install a set of Power Steps. Most everything I read made it seem all 'hunky dory(sp?)'...well I've been at it for 4 days on & off and they still don't work.
Short background. I'm no genius, but figured I could install these w/out too much trouble. I've changed my own heads, cam, intake, brakes, and tune up stuff for years on my 95 Mustang GT. I purchased the Power Steps for a SuperCrew (even though I've got a S'cab) off of E-Bay at what I think is a fantastic price. (figured there could not be that much of a difference between them, and I was right)
Things that went right:
1) The E-bay deal was sweet and straight-up. Delivery was very quick. All pieces were there, including directions (thought I read that they weren't)
2) My son came thru to be that extra pair of hands
Things that went wrong:
1)The weather. Cold as crap, and then started blowing also. I didn't want to wait a month to get into my garage, so did it out in the driveway. If you think you are going to do this in 3 hours, think again.
2) The instructions show long bolts on the "whats in the box" page, but no where else. I spent 2 hours making the small bolts work on the driver side front arm.
3) The controller box connector doesn't seat all the way w/the harness. Can't get the locking tabs to seat, but all the pins make contact and it is tight enough that I doubt it would ever come apart.
4) Once I got it all hooked up, plugged the fuse in, both boards went up. YESSSS!! That was the last time the passenger side board moved via the motor.
5) Wiring! Instructions say there will be multiples of the black/blue wire. I found one black/blue, two black/yellow, and one black/pink. Don't need black/blue (S'cab remember?), so wired up black/yellow and black/pink. Thought that the black/pink was drivers side but was wrong. Nothing happened. Hooked up black/yellow and drivers side board worked just fine. Used the black/yellow that I had been playing with for 5 min to power the passenger side....nothing.
6)Got on here and did more reading...saw where someone took there motor down, then put it back and it worked, so............took pass side motor down, left it connected (figured maybe it was too tight or something), test probe the signal wire and still nothing. Ok, took pass motor and brought it over to driver's side, plugged it in and viola! MOTION. Verified that I had continuity thru harness on pass side that just leaves the controller box.
7) Figured I'd had enough, called tech support and sat on hold for a while. Left mssg for Bruce. Started putting stuff back and put sill plate cover back on. Closed drivers door and guess what is still hanging out the side of my truck. UNBELIEVABLE....pull the sill plate back off and check the wiring. Connections are all good. Unplug fuse and plug it back in...nothing. Unplug control box and plug it back in.. nothing. Went back to front of truck, scratched head, went back to driver's side and the board was up. Par for the course......
8) About 6 hours later, I get a call back from Bruce, tech support (he must be the only person there). Since I have the 3rd, and worst incarnation of 'luck', "NO LUCK AT ALL".... I missed the call.
Best bet for future purchasers.....get new controller, and try to hook up w/someone who has done at least one install of these before. Knowing what I know now, I do believe they could be installed in 2 hours. Will be sending e-mail tonight, and calling Bruce, I mean, tech support tomorrow, in hopes of being able to exchange this controller box....Thanks for letting me vent....

sorry to hear that, i installed mine by myself on my screw. only took about 2 hours
so did the kit come with the big bolts or not?
basically the steps arent coming out when you open the doors is that correct?
you might have the wrong yellow/black wire. there might be another one?

Resolved!
Finally got these to work right.....(fingers crossed)....talked to tech support and he had me disconnect the signal wires and ground them individually to very that the controller was good. That worked fine. I used the other two diode splitters (Screw steps on a Scab, so I had 2 spares) and tried 2 other wires. Turns out there are 3 blk/ylw, 2 blk/blu, and 2 blk/pink wires. Now maybe I got a bad batch of coloring or something but my 2nd black/pink looks black/red to me. I had 2 other people look at the color and they said "red" also. So a combination of a bad diode and wrong signal wires fixed me right up.
Yeah, the kit came w/the long bolts. Just none of the instructions say to use them.....
