Underdrive Pulleys???
And who was this comment directed to anyway?
UDP tradeoff
i just got here; and just got my F150. so far, the only real value i've seen in these posts is Windsor's comment re the tradeoff to his AC. I don't know much about any of this, but i do know that the engine and accessories were built with a certain size pulley, etc., and if you change that there's probably going to be some tradeoff for whatever gain there might be.
That's what i'm interested in. i gather there is some gain, but you have to be careful about how much you pay. besides the AC issue Windsor mentioned, are there any other such issues, particularly in alternator output, PS pump pressure, etc.
I did learn something from all the posts, pls don't let me imply otherwise. I just thought the UDP tradeoff would be an important factor and it seems to be almost ignored. Although RMS8 certainly seems to know his stuff here, i tend to skip past his sneering posts. i've got enough with my cars sneering at me, i don't need it from strangers.

Poo-yie, don't want to get involved in this debate, but just wanted to add my experience. I have had underdrive pulleys on a previous vehicle and they do free up some horsepower, but they really reduced the efficiency of my air conditioning at idle. It wasn't bad when you started moving, but in heavy traffic on a hot day, it would get warm. I'm not sure if it had more to do with the lack of air flow through the condenser or the slower speed of the compressor. I ended up removing them. E-fans would probably help the condenser issue. Just something else to consider.
For people like myself, that can't afford to throw a supercharger, turbo or nitros on our trucks, let alone swap our 4.6 for a navi 5.4 like I've been told numerous times since I started posting on here. All of our little, worthless mods, add up. I dont care if i free up 4 hp from a UDP, or that I only got 5hp from putting in a K&N in the stock intake instead of buying a CAI.
I only buy what I can afford, without using bill or food money. It will take me way to long to save up for anything over $200..
that said. all my little mods, add up.. soon I'll get a CAI, UDP, Headers, new exhaust.. then when I can buy a tuner, those lil mods will pay off more..
just my .02

i'm like you - I have to go "one piece at a time" and i have to do what i can, when i can. that's why i do the research, such as here.
can i assume you are in san antonio? if so, me too - is there an F150 group in san antonio?
thanks
joe

My experience was on an older 351W in a 92 Bronco. I can't say these underdrive pulleys have a similar effect on the modular engine line up. But I'd certainly ask enough questions to rule out whether it has a similar impact. That was the only issue I had. I didn't notice any decrease in power steering effort or alternator output.
I have no idea, but the 4.6 and 5.4 V-8s are. It certainly isn't a small block Ford either. The point of my post was to point out the problem I had with an under drive pulley setup. I'm not condemning them, but I think you need to query those that have them on your specific application and see what they felt about a/c performance and whether it was worth it or not.
sorry about that, windsor, I wasn't correcting you- i'm still learning this. it's been 20 or more years since i looked at any of this stuff. I"ve missed several generations of technology - i used to make money tuning people's cars on a bet with a vacuum gauge and a screwdriver. that was the last time i knew anything about cars.
