Fuel Gauge Stuck in One Position

I hope this the right place for this thread. Didn't seem to belong in drivetrain. I have an 04 SCREW that the fuel gauge has begun to stick at low levels (right around 1/4 tank). The miles remaining on the gas tank on the digital display is still counting down, while the gauge remains fixed in a position. I always assumed that the miles remaining somehow worked off the sending unit float position. So here is my question:

If the mile count down is still working, does that focus my trouble shooting on the gauge versus the sending unit?

Any ideas on how to check the gauge? It seems like the sending unit is the more common failure.

Fuel Gauge

Might not be the gauge. An easy one to do is see if there's a ground strap between the tank or sender to the frame or ground. Much older vehicle I helped a friend with many years back and that turned out to be his issue. Next would be wiring to insure there's no opens or shorts but beyond that you need someone more knowledgable than me.

Good luck

Paul

If you refuel with the key in the on/accessory position you can make the fuel gauge act weird. I've done it a few times and it won't act right again until you fill up again with the key off.

^^^I was thinkin the same thing, I've done that once and it got stuck at the 3/4 line. Should be fixed after next fill up.

I always take the key out when I fuel. Hummmmm. I wonder if I should try it again. I was trying not to fill the tank in case I need to do anything with the sender.

Mine sticks at the 3/4 line if the key is on while i fill, but it used to stick around 1/4 if i would only add enough to get to 1/2 a tank or under. Now i make sure i fill it all the way up with the key off and it doesnt give any problems.
