$50 manual to power slider conversion using all original glass

I got my 04 screw last fall and love my new truck. I was really happy it had a sliding window, until I seen my buddy's truck with a power slider. I really didn't use the manual slider much because you always had to get out of the truck, climb into the back to open or close it. I then started looking at the after market windows and didn't really want to spend that kind of money. (that kinda cash could go toward a nice exhaust) I started looking back and forth between my truck and my friends slider and noticed alot was the same except the bottom track. Looking closer I seen my truck had a plastic liner in the bottom and his didn't. After taking the middle window out I was able to take the plastic liner out to find the same slot/track as his truck. I then was lucky enough to find a lariat with smashed power slider at the wreckers. I pulled all the parts I needed and it only cost me $50 out the door. I took some pics of the install and will post a quick "how to". It might take me a few pages to get it all posted. Sorry about the pics....it was with my phone and alot are too close. I can answer and questions or take better pics of stuff if anyone needs it. After the practice of comparing the two trucks I can get it apart pretty quick now.

Parts I got from the auto wreckers

- power window motor with cables still attached
- 3 bolts and threaded clips to mount motor
- 3 plastic cable supports (push in type)
- window switch from overhead console
- wireharness from drivers side rear pillar to switch ( runs up the pillar and across headliner)
- plastic tray middle window sits in and cables attach to

I didn't take any pics removing the parts at the auto wreckers, but its pretty straight forward.

1. You need to remove the upper plastic liner of the sliding window. It starts about 4-5 inches from the drivers side pillar. Its kinda up under the headliner, but you can see it and get a pair of needle nose pliers onto it. Just pull down a few inches. (window closed) After you get it down abit you can start to pull toward the drivers side so it pulls out from over the window. Now that its out you can lift the middle window up then out to remove it.

*******these instructions start assuming you have taken the back seat and rear pillar covers off already ************

Now that the window it out you can remove the lower plastic liner to expose the track needed for the power slider.

Slide the three threaded clips into the square holes in the back wall and bolt the window motor to it.

Push the three plastic cable supports into the holes below window motor wire harness. There is two that go on the passenger side and one on the drivers just to the right of the body control module. (I think thats what it is called) Now clip the cables into the supports. The drivers side cable get run behind the BCM.

You should now have the motor bolted in and the cable up in the general area of the window. Notice the arrow in the pic. This is where the harness that goes up into the headliner starts and is the one you will be swapping out. The truck is wired for the power slider up until here if you don't have a moonroof.

We are done with the cables for a few steps. This pic isn't good, but you can kinda see the smaller slot in the middle of the track on the right side. At the end of the left side you can see it opens up to the full width of the track. This is where we install the plactic window tray and cables.

Now we need to install the plastic tray the window sits in. You can't see it in this pic,but along the top edge it has a long slot for the window and a hole in each end for the cables to lock into. The bottom has a t-shape that under the narrow part in the window track.

To install the tray you have to start at the far left side of the window track where it widens. (passenger side) You must drop the t-shaped part on the bottom of the tray into the track at the wide part then slide it to the right into the narrow part. This will lock it in and stop it from pulling up. When you do this the right side of the tray will still be up on top of the track. You then need to slide the tray all the way to the right so the t-shape part drops in on the other side. I am sure there is technical names for these things, but I don't know what they are.

Starting with the passenger side install cable end into the hole at the end of the tray. You have to put the lead end in from the top then pull it over so the cable is in line with the tray. I don't have a pic but where the plastic part of the cable and the bare wire meet the cable has a t-shaped part on the bottom as well. So you lock the cable end into the tray then pull back on the plastic part of the cable until the t-shaped part drops into the wider part at the end of the track. Once it drops down push the plastic part of the cable toward the center to lock it in. Then do the same with the drivers side cable. (hope this all makes sense)

With a heat gun apply heat to the opposite side of the window latch. While heating use a pair of pliers and gently try twisting the latch. (do not try to pry off as it may break window) When the glue gets warm enough it will twist easily and come off.

While its still warm remove any remaining glue. There is still a black square patch of paint or epoxy of some sort and paint remover wouldn't touch it. I don't mind the black square on the window, but if anyone knows what it is and how to get it off please post it.

After the window is cool and cleaned you can put it back in the truck. Lift it up into position and lower it into the slot on the sliding tray. You can also now put the upper plastic liner in. It goes in reverse the removal. Slide it up over top of middle glass until it back in original position.

Pull down your overhead console or remove the dome light....which ever you have. On the back side you can remove the light section with a torx screwdriver to expose the blank section between the lights where the switch goes.

Install the switch in the middle. I forgot to mention I got the whole middle section of the dome light not just the switch. The truck I got it out of had a moonroof and that is why there is two switches. It also had tan interior so I painted the exposed side black until I find a grey single switch.

You now need to run the wire harness from the rear drivers pillar and along the headliner. There are lots of "how to" threads about removing the headliner and they should be used as the guide. The harness that has the arrow in post #6 is the one to replace. On my truck that harness only had one wire going up into the headliner.....a black ground wire. So I removed that harness and replaced with the one from the wrecking yard. You don't have to but I removed all the wires I didn't need from the harness before installing. It won't hurt at all to leave them I am just picky that way.(moonroof wires)

Now just test and reinstall your headliner, plastic trim, overhead console and backseat and your done. My dad helped me with the install, we spent about 1 hour at the auto wreckers removing parts and about 1 1/2 - 2 hours doing the install on my truck. May take a bit longer if just one person. I hope some guys find this usefull. I have not taken any pic of the comleted install, but hope to in the next day or two and post them.:beers::beers::beers:

P.S. Don't forget give the track a light amount of grease or lube.
