2004 Screw 5.4-no communication

I have a 2004 Screw Lariat, I have tried my Snap-On MT2500 scanner to pull the codes in Generic OBD II as it is only good to 2001, to no luck, it will power up and I have checked the fuse for the port and lighter, which is good. I also tried my friends MT2500 updated to 2004 with the correct personality key in and it will not communicate, still powers up, but will not communicate. Is this because of the 2004 using the CAN system? If so, what do I need to do? Please help as frustration level is climbing!

You say your friends is updated to '04. The scanner you use HAS to be CAN compliant. I don't think they could update your friends to CAN. The '04 Ford NB was the 1st Ford, as far as I know that was CAN. They went to CAN in '04 because it was an all new vehicle though it wasn't federally mandated that ALL vehicles had to be CAN til '07. Buy a scanner through Amazon or Harbor Freight. You can buy a CAN compliant for as little as $25.- $30.

Thanks, that was what I figured, I know his MT2500 said to use the OBD II connector with key K17 in it and CAN 1 connector, so that was what I thought had happened. I figured I CAN't do CAN! Had to try and find some humor in this whole thing.
